When do you guys recommend getting Capone neutered?!?!
Im sure there is already a thread about this somewhere, but I did some digging and couldn’t find it so sorry if this is a repeat question..
He is currently 3 months old. Bola is also a male. We are planning on entering him in weight pulling classes when he gets older.
I had someone tell me if I neuter him too soon, he’ll act like a puppy for the rest of his life and never fill out. But I also know that the longer intact he is the more likely problems are to arise.
Opinions?!

depends on the dog.. rufus was neutered at 5 months old only because i couldnt take the humping anymore he did to the other dogs lol... he was the runt of the litter, and is 55 lbs, all his siblings are 60 + in weight. the only thing i noticed with him is he is leggy, but i dont know if thats due to his MIA father or the early neuter.. his mother was an american bully style dog, but the father is unknown. my friend had her gsd neutered at 6 months and he is HUGE and his head comes even with my waist lol... he had no ill effects from his neuter . early neutering can impact filling out, or it wont, i think it boils down to a 50-50 chance it might or might not.
if Bola is going to stay intact then you have to neuter capone, and even then its possible the male/male combo could still have DA issues...

Is Bola not neutered? I assumed he was because he came from a shelter. I got Saxon neutered at 6 months and have seen no ill effects. He is 18 months old and has calmed down a lot from when he was a puppy, though he is still crazy and energetic. He isn't beefy, but he's strong and he may still fill out a bit more. I wouldn't want to do any younger than 6 months, but that's just personal preference.

I had to bring Rocky back to the shelter to be done when they thought he was six months however the vet concluded Rocky to be much younger then they the shelter thought he was. Therefore he was done between 4-6 months old. I believe he was 4 or 5 months. He sure filled out. He has long legs very tall. And weighs close to 70lbs which is exactly what the vet predicted when he was 33lbs at the age of no more then 3-4 months as far as vet was concerned. I think the general rule is 6months. Oh the only thing I think happened was he has a really small penis for his size. Which is fine with me. Other dogs that have been done older have much bigger junk.

Bola is neutered (Thank God...When we met him, he wasnt and he had 1 thing and 1 thing only on his mind). lol
I was hoping to try and keep Capone intact for 24 months because of the weight pulling but I just dont know if its worth everthing that goes along with it. Im sure hed still have drive and fill out fine if I neuter him when I cant stand it any more (Or around 1 year). Right?!?

Saxon was neutered at 6 months and doing very well at weight pull so far. I've been really proud of his progress and so has the trainer! I think success in weight pull has more to do with the time and effort that you put into training than the age you neuter your dog. Also, I have heard of dogs being studded successfully at 10 months. So, if you are going to wait until he is a year to neuter him, you REALLY need to be careful to make sure he doesn't wander as he could impregnate a female if he got loose and we all know there are enough Pit Bulls and Pit mixes needing homes out there.

Yeah we have an Pit bull in the neighborhood who is not neutered and he gets out and wonders at least once a month. No one knows how he escapes. It is really making a bad name for the breed with this dog wondering around. It is up to you but I think 24 months is a long time to wait.

I guess I would be more worried about what the hormones do to his disposition.
Winston was already fixed when he came to the shelter at the age of 1. He has filled out nicely. Cleveland was fixed between 3 and 4. I cant tell the difference... except Cleveland has a coin purse and Winston doesn't really.

I agree with Mel up there.
Neutering him at 6 months is probably best. You don't want him to be 2 (aka: the time they sometimes decide to not like other dogs) and still intact.

Thanks for all the advice. Im going to go ahead and get him neutered at 6 months. (Itd also be cheaper than when hes 2 because hell weigh less lol...cheaper AND wiser yay!! )
