Saturday night Mia's mom and I took Mia to our friends' house for a visit. We have a whole group of friends that all hang out at the same condominium complex. A few of them have dogs as well, mixed breeds from as small as Pugs to as large as a Golden Lab. There is also an old rescue-trained German Sheppard that has retired from public service. We like to take Mia along as it gives her a chance to socialize, and become accustomed to having other dogs around.
Anyway, as we pull up I notice that there is a dog running around that I have never seen before. The dog is not on a leash so I know that I have to keep a pretty tight grip on Mia just to be safe. To make sure I have her under control I foolishly wrapped the open end of the leash around my wrist. We join the group without any trouble. Mia is excited and kind of nervous with all of the people and other dogs around, so I had her sit down right next to me and calmed her down as much as possible. She says hello to everybody in turn and to the other dogs that she is familiar with. She sits down next to me and someone hands me a beer. The new dog approaches Mia and they check each other out without any problem. The owner calls the new dog over to her and all is well. A little while later the new dog approaches again, it's owner tries to call him back, but not being on a leash he ignores her. He takes a playful pounce toward Mia and she springs up with excitement. Oh boy, a dog that wants to play! She jumps toward the pouncing pup almost yanking me off my feet. She begins to strain at the leash dragging me about ten feet across the parking lot. I am trying my best to free my hand from the leash, but it is so taut that I can't get my hand out of it, plus my free hand is still holding on to my beer, so it is not much help. As I am trying to remove myself from the leash the other dog jumps up a two foot high retaining wall onto a patch of grass. Mia springs after him and the ride is on; she pulled me right off my feet over the wall and onto the grass. I yelled at her and thankfully got her to stop or she might have dragged me around the whole complex. Seeing me sprawled out on the grass she came over and gave me a nice kiss and slurped up some of the beer that was foaming up out of the can in my left hand.
I knew she was strong, but I had no idea she was that powerful. I am 6 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds and she pulled me right off my feet. I have a new respect for how incredibly strong she really is. It makes me glad that she is a good dog that is eager to please, I am glad that she lets us be in charge otherwise I don't know that we would be able to control her. I will always be mindful of how strong she is and I will never get myself wrapped up in her leash again. My eyes have been opened.
