For those who are or ever have been in the ring or participated in working events, where did you start, how did things begin, & what advice do you offer someone interested and trying to get in on the world of show and dog sports??

Well, what are you looking to compete in (which sport)? What registry? Let's start there.

Ive been on the fence about confrontation, trying to learn more. That.would be with AKC. It seems SO political tho. And weight pull, tracking, and agility are the 3 biggest interest of mine. I obviously can't show either of my boys, but it's something I'm trying to learn about for the future.

I started at fun shows and the fun categories at other shows and had the good sense to stop there.

That eliminated weightpull, tracking and lurecoursing...

The reason that Emily jut gave is exactly why I got into weight pull! There was a class nearby!

With AKC conformation, some breeds are more political than others. AmStaffs it's not too bad overall, especially considering the classes aren't very big. A really good primer on showing is called Show Me! by D. Caroline Coile. As far as the other stuff, you can potentially compete with the dogs you have now, if you were to get PAL/ILP registration from AKC ( www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm) or Limited Privilege with UKC ( www.ukcdogs.com/Web.nsf/WebPages/Registration/LimitedPrivilege)
