I don't give to many extras..Plain yogart 3 times a week, raw egg twice a week. What really made a Huge difference in my pups energy level and overall health is GREEN TRIPE.. I got the Bravo green tripe in 2lb containers, and it doesn't smell as everyone says.. ;D so I buy 4 lbs at a time due to not enough room in the freezer, I pay 4.99 per container at our Global paet food outlet..Greentripe dot com has some great stuff, but you have to order 20lbs. min..otherwise I'd prolly buy their tripe.

Mine like some canned salmon sometimes, tuna once in a while, cottage cheese now and then, sometimes I add a 1/2 cup canned carrots or sweet potatoe or green beans. Not much because if they get too much they get loose poops. As dogs are canines, my feeling is that they need meat more than veggies, but that is just my humble opinion, I know others feel differently. Sometimes I buy an organic chicken and boil that up, debone it all, and add some of it , again not too much, 1/2 cup or a bit more. I never feed anything from a pig, no ham or pork. Also, having just finished taking a Microbiology course I would advise against feeding raw eggs because they can contain bacteria that can kill. Better to cook the eggs and feed. (yes I know the old timey folks used to feed raw eggs). Well, maybe not everyone will agree but that's ok, no problems here. It is interesting to see what everyone feeds ! Flaxseed is great for the coat, I feed it to my horse for that reason also. Good for people, too. Interesting that Bamapit bull lady feeds the vegetarian formula of Natural Balance and her dog does well, that's great ! Feeding Buffalo? Great stuff, used to eat lots of it when I was Out West in Wyoming/Montana. If it wasn't so expensive I'd love to feed it to my dogs too.

Oooh, oooops, sorry bout that Bamapitbullmom, Jessica. Ok, Mary I am happy that veggie feeding works good for you & Luca. yay. Ok, has everyone seen the news about the eggs & salmonella poisoning? It's on News page and it is the very same salmonella typhimurium that we studied in Microbiology that makes you so sick you end up in the hospital, I do believe it can be lethal. This is what I was talking about. Does anyone have any info on how this would affect a dog/cat? I would suspect that it can kill them as well as a human. This outbreak is across 42 states and has has hopitalized 18% of these people who got it. Input anyone? Personally, I only buy organic eggs from free range chickens, just my little idiosyncracy. beloved bullies here in kentucky

Hi All, Ok, just reading an article on News about contamination of a certain peanut butter with SALMONELLA TYPHIMURIUM. This is the same exact strain of Salmonella that contaminated the EGGS in my note above. The peanut butter has killed 3 people so far. But, don't panic yet, according to the article the peanut butter was not on supermarket shelves but was sold in vats to institutions such as schools, nursing homes, etc. Check it out. All I'm trying to do is to warn everyone of the danger of Salmonells contamination. Ok, I just dug out my notes from the college Microbiolgy class, here goes: This particular strain of it is a gram negative, motile rod, an enterobacteria (intestinal) and the most reported foodborne illness is US. Organisms are ingested, it is associated w/chicken/poultry, the bacterium being passed via the eggs, found in raw milk and milk products, etc. It can also be carried by reptiles, snakes, turtles, etc. So if anyone has those kinds of pets they can be carriers. It kills many people ! Takes few bacterium to infect & is resistant to environmental factores like heat/cold etc. Mode of transmission is feces, flies, fiingers, food, and inaminate objects, sewage, water also. It causes ulcers in stomache & bloody stools, distended abdomen, lethargy, delirium (in humans, but could be also in dogs?). People can often be carriers and have no sypmptoms, carried in gall bladder. So that's all I have on this right now, one could always do a Google search to find out if there is info on how it affects pets, I havn't had time to do that yet. It is my understanding that gram negative bacterium are more difficult to kill than gram positive. If anyone has any input on this I would appreciate hearing from you. I know that for myself I try to be very careful about making sure the dog foodbowls & water bowls are washed each day with hot, soapy water and rinsed profusely and carefully and drain dried (stainless steel bowls). Raw meat & raw bones can easily be carriers of Salmonella bacterium. This is one of the reasons I havn't gone "raw" with my dogs. Maybe that is silly of me? I know many people do feed raw and have great success, but for me I have the reservations , and maybe that is due to my learning about the bacteria in Micro class. ??? Ok, hope everyone's pets are safe and that no one has any problems with Salmonella but just wanted to share the article. Also, I do filter my water for pets & me, but only have a Brita filter currently. Soon I plan to buy a "Berkey" water filter, this one is expensive, but it filters out bacteria, cysts, viruses, giardia and so on, it is a filter that is used worldwide in 3rd world countries (mostly by missionaries) due to the poor hygienic conditions in these countries (contaminated water/lack of sewage etc). If anyone is interested in learing about this filter, let me know. Our own water here in Kentucky comes from the Green River and that river is so bad with contamination it is scary, they even find dead bodies in it and the fish in it are sick or dead. They announce regularly for people here to boil the water due to contamination. duh Anyhow, sorry to bounce around from Salmonella to the water, but water can also be a source of that contamination. later, beloved bullies here in kentucky

Really, when you stop and think about it, do we know where our food is really from, what's really in it, and how it is being processed?

Sometimes being too careful can get you into trouble as well. There is a such thing as healthy immunity which can only work properly if exposed to bacterias. Obviously, it's important to take precautions but dogs are generally pretty resiliant and capable of handling more than we give them credit for. When my first child was a baby I was asking my pediatrician a list of typical (over the top) first mom questions. After making it obvious that I thought my child was fragile and helpless, my pediatrician said, "Look, when you have your first child you boil the pacifer when you drop it. Second child, you blow the dirt off and give it back, third child you pick it up, dirt and all and throw it to them hoping to not hit them in the eye."

I had salmonella but no one else at school or home became ill even though I ate the same foods as others did. The source was never identified. It's not an experience I'd choose to repeat, but I still eat out, still cook chicken, etc. and give my dogs raw eggs on occasion.

As 'extras' I feed cored apples, carrots, the occasional egg (with shell), and random veggies get tossed to him as I'm cooking. Why do you give them the egg shell? And what's green tripe? ???
