Lately Capone has been making a coughing/gagging sound whenever he gets excited, goes on walks, is wrestling with Bola, and sometimes after he drinks or eats.
This has probably been going on for 2 days.
Should I take him to the vet or wait it out?!!?
Something similar to this happened when he was a little pup and I rushed him to the vet and the vet said that he probably swollowed something that cut his throat. When that happened last time, he stopped coughing by the next day so I dont know what to do now!!!

Well, I took Capone to the vet this morning and the vet couldn’t see any reason for the coughing/gagging. So, he again assumed that Capone probably swallowed something, maybe ate too fast and irritated his throat. I had him do a heart worm check and that came back negative....I give him Heart Guard every month but a couple months ago I was a few days late. The vet fed him a brown goop that look like really thick syrup for his throat....now he has mild diarrhea. Ugh! If this continues, I’m going to go elsewhere and get a second opinion. ...Sometimes I feel like my vet gets annoyed by me and treats me like I’m always over reacting.

Chubby gets that random coughing sometimes. Vet took xrays a while back (making sure the cancer hadn't spread internally yet) and saw his trachea was damaged. He suspects over-zealous use of a choke chain. Chubby gets what I call "old man cough", that sort of random, dry "ehh!"

Yes new vet. Ugh....Time to do a ton of research. lol This areas tricky because most vets specialize in livestock and do not really seem to know what they are doing when it comes companion animals.
Capone does pull like crazy at the beginning of walks. Ive never used a choke chain on him but he has a martingale collar (I think thats what its called, It tightens up). Sugar--Thats how Capone sounds, a dry gag/cough.
Should I find a new vet fast and take him else where?? His coughing has pretty much stopped now but it still concerns me that this has happened twice in his 7 month old life.

if he pulls try using a harness instead, its possible his trachea was damaged before you got him , or he damaged it by pulling on walks

I agree with ME that you should probably start using a harness with Capone, at least until you know why he's coughing.

I had the same problem with Lola. I switched to a 2" martingale on walks, and a harness on trail hikes, the problem disappeared.

being a few days late on HG wouldn't be a problem, BTW.. the dosage is actually good for about 45 days, as I understand it

Emily, that is really good to know. Wish I would have known that earlier...... Lol, I was panicking and blaming myself when he started coughing. I really need to get him a 2" collar. The one he has now is 1" and it’s starting to look misproportioned. I know we’ve discussed harnesses 100 times but what’s the best?!? I really don’t want anything that will rub and give him sores. Harnesses scare me a little due to this.

a 1 inch collar will cause choking with certain dogs, a 2 inch would be much better, i get mine from www.trendyhounds.com her prices are good and the martingales are sturdy, i use the 2 inch ones if you want a good walking harness have one made by missy v at brown dog design weightpullharness.com/WalkingRunningHarnesses.htmli have had 2 of her weight pull harnesses and she makes them fantastic
