So last night Chubby and I had to go stay with my parents (very last minute) because since I'm an hourly employee I wasn't going to get paid if I didn't come in this week (even though 90% of mass transit still isn't working). My parents don't live too far from my job and my dad said he could drive me in the next few mornings.
My mom had forgotten to pick up a rat poison tray they had left in a corner and about a minute after we come home I see Chubby had his snout in the tray and had gobble up about half the tray (slightly larger than a deck of cards). I immediately grabbed him and shoved my hand as far as I could into his throat and started yanking out what I could. We hopped right back into the car and raced over to our normal vet (about 5 minutes away) only to see they are still shuttered. We drove over to the emergency vet (another 5-7 minutes away).
We didn't know what kind of poison it was, only the brand so they vet had to call Poison Control and was on the phone with them for about 10 minutes. This was followed by another 10 minutes of them discussing the estimate with me (not going to lie, it was getting hard for me not to start yelling because with poison I know time is very precious). They finally gave Chubby a shot to make him vomit about 30 minutes after he initially ate the stuff. He vomited about 3 minutes later. They put him on fluids and we had to leave.
I got a call around 7pm and the Dr. said that his anticoagulant levels were very high (so yes, I'm freaking out now). I get another call around 10pm from the next shift vet and said that he thought the results were suspicious because of the delayed time it took for the machine to give them so he re-did the test. He told me that Chubby's blood was fine and we could pick him up that night if we wanted. I told him I would prefer if Chubby stayed monitored for at least a full night. Got a call from a third vet this morning saying Chubby is doing ok, that he will have to be on Vitamin K for 30 days and that I need to have my regular vet check his blood in 3-4 days from now and re-check again 3-4 days after he is done with the Vitamin K.
Last night my mom went around the entire house (3 floors) to make sure there weren't any more, she then vacuumed and mopped everything to make sure there wasn't any residue. She feels awful (crying most of the night because she feels responsible). She is going to help me cover the vet bills (which the down payment I had to put yesterday was $1800).
I'm just feeling so weird right now. Whiel I was at the vet's office watching Chubby vomit all I could think was "1hour ago I was sitting in his bed with him watching Fringe on TV...wtf happened?"
The vet is telling me he should be ok with the Vitamin K but I just feel like I don't want to let myself believe that. I'm just scared. I couldn't sleep all last night, just kept smelling the new sweater I had gotten him recently that smelled like him (weird I know).
I will be staying with Chubby at my parents house for the next month because since they work from home Chubby won't be alone during the day (just in case anything happens).
