Today I had the opportunity to visit a wolf sanctuary with a FB (Rebecca) friend turned real friend. She had an auction last month to raise money for the sanctuary and I donated a couple of things so she invited me to come along with her and drop off the check and 350 pounds of food for the wolves. There are currently only two wolves at the Sanctuary. Lomasi and Anoki are a brother and sister pair (who have been spayed and neutered since coming to the sanctuary). They were rescued from an owner who was attempting to breed them here in Maine, they both showed signs that their former owner had mistreated them and were fearful of humans when they first arrived. He had bought them from a breeder in Arizona (I think?). Anoki shows signs that he was inbred and Lomasi has many health problems. They are both happy and well cared for at the sanctuary, though, and will live out the rest of their days in peace.

A volunteer named Danielle went inside with the wolves and told us all about wolf behavior. Here are a few pictures of her interacting with the wolves.

With Lomasi:
We were allowed to greet them at the fence. We were able to hold our hands flat and let the wolves sniff and lick us.
We could also put our faces up to the gate and allow them to lick our faces!! I chickened out! Tim was brave enough to get some kisses from Lomasi, though! She was quite smitten with him! I didn't get a good picture of her kissing him, but here is my favorite picture of the two of them.
We also got them howling! Lomasi looked quite elegant howling:
Anoki looked... a little derpy:
Beautiful Lomasi:
Derpy Anoki:
Anoki looking wolfy and handsome:
Anoki laying on his house (Dis mah house):
Also at the sanctuary is Shadow the Malamute mix (with a small portion of wolf in her). She is actually up for adoption to an experienced home.

They are so different from dogs in ways that I can't even begin to describe. They have a completely different energy and... presence (that's not the right word, but it's the closest word I can think of). Lomasi was very charming (Tim came up with that word for her, I think he was just as smitten with her as she was with him), she was very ladylike and elegant. Anoki was a dork. He was goofy and funny. That said, they were both incredibly powerful. I thought for sure that Lomasi was around 90 pounds and Anoki 110, but Danielle said that Lomasi only weighed around 60 pounds and Anoki only 70-75. Even so, they were much more powerful than a dog of the same size! They were lean, but muscular and I could feel their strength beneath their fur. In fact, one of the reasons we couldn't put our fingers through the fence was because they might break them while rubbing the fence with their scent. They were also very quick with their movements, so it was hard to get a clear photo. It was absolutely incredible to be able to see these animals up close. I can't even believe that I was able to meet these amazing animals.
