I want to brush up on obedience plus of course start training the pup. I've used hot dog bits in the past with success, but I'd like a treat not so squishy and one that can last all day. I have some small cotton bags with satin cords, I plan to put treats in them and just have the bag slung over my shoulder while I go about my day and instead of having an 'obedience time' have rather a lot of little learning opportunities throughout the day. Any ideas?

if you nuke hot dog pieces long enough they turn into jerky type treats cut into 1 inch squares and put on a paper plate. cover with a paper towel and have a coffee mug in the microwave filled with water. nuke for i think 1 minute. its been a few years since i did those that way.. you can also boil chicken and cut into squares, use string cheese, or even turkey

They LOVE hot dogs so I will try the nuke idea thanks. I think I might but a small ziploc inside the bags, so they don't get to icky.

I love the Natural Balance food rolls cut into tiny pieces. Or Zuke's minis, cut in half. The Zuke's wouldn't be messy at all. The Natural Balance would crumble some.

I LOVE using Freeze Dried Lamb Lung for training. It comes in a half pound bag for 11.95 or one pound bag for 19.95. It comes in large chunks, but easily breaks into smaller pieces. It's freeze dried already, so it doesn't dry out. Saxon loves it and will pretty much do anything for it! I also mix in some of his kibble and some buddy biscuits.

I've been buying the leanest cuts of pork I can find (that's reasonably priced) and cutting it into tiny pea-sized bits (it's easier to cut while partially frozen) and then just tossing it in a heated frying pan until cooked. After cooked, I let them sit in a strainer over something to catch any access liquid so it's easier on my hands, and then I separate handfuls into sandwich baggies or smaller tupperware containers. I usually do a lot at a time and freeze so it's easier to deal with. Since it's cooked, it does tend to last longer out of the fridge, and if you need it literally all day long, you could bring a frozen baggie or two with you and they will defrost as the day goes on and still be good.
I've used pork roasts and the boneless roast that pork chops are cut from, and pork tongue (easiest to find at Asian supermarkets around me in NJ) because it's super lean so it's easier to handle once cooked.
Theoretically, you could do this with chicken, beef, lamb, or whatever else you wanted as well.

Honestly, I've kept boiled chicken, cooked hot dogs, cheese bits, and similar items for a day's worth of training. The cheese gets a little mushy by the end of the day, just keep everything out of the sun and unless it's really hot, thoroughly cooked meat should be ok, walking around in a pouch for the day. I've never had a problem. You can also toss some kibble in the mix, so there is less of the stuff that goes bad, and more kibble flavored like whatever treats you've got goin' on.
Good ideas in this thread!

Oh, if your pup can have beef, K9 Magic is like doggie crack, in my experience. Ingredients from the manufacturer's website: beef muscle meat, green tripe, oat flour, garlic, thyme, corriander, and parsley. It is preserved naturally with Vitamin C and sea salt. www.amazon.com/Tripe-Dog-Treat-Roll-Magic/dp/B009DOB44A I haven't met a dog that doesn't go bananas for it. I slice the roll and then cut it lengthwise and then into little bits (similar to the natural balance treat roll). Then freeze in baggies. An alternative if beef isn't an option is tripe treats by PetKind - www.petkind.com/treats - they make tripe "jerky" style treats that very easily break apart into pea-sized treats. They actually are super easy to use because you can carry a few of the strips around and break off as you go. They make them in Lamb (has chicken also, I believe), as well as Beef, Pork, Bison, and they make a Salmon one that's not tripe, but is great for pups with allergies to other proteins. Their website has a store locator in the top right corner, and if you click that you can search locally or look for online retailers. I've had tons of success with these. Anything tripe has been a huge success here (with my pups, fosters, and with dogs I work with at a kennel), and this is one of the only companies I've found that does lamb tripe instead of beef, and since Roxy has a beef allergy, these have been amazing.

I was going to suggest the zukes for non messy and something that does not go bad. I always kept them in my bag in case I did not have time to cut up something else. There is nothing worse then forgetting that bag with chicken or hot dogs in it and smelling something awful then finding the source.
