Thank you for posting this, Liz. It was really good. "Pets Adviser found that around 75 to 85 percent of dogs shot by police are pit bulls." Unreal! The stories in this report are atrocious and made me feel physically sick. Honestly, I had to stop reading several times just to regroup. Holy sh*t, some of the idiocy. This article makes me feel lucky I've never had one of my dogs shot the several times I've had to call police to my place. Pit Bulls and police obviously don't mix.

Whenever I have had the chance to talk candidly with a police officer in my area, I have brought up Saxon and showed photos of him. He has been pet by three officers, two of them in my apartment one at Midas. I've tried very hard to make the officers we have met aware of how friendly he is. Him being shot is one of my biggest fears.

this is one of my biggest fears too.. sadie is just dopy and would run to anyone ... she would be shot first.. rufus would be shot for barking and running to someone... its really really scary. and people wonder why i am so anal about collars and doors locked and gates up..

This is precisely why I crate my dogs when we're not here. Buster needs to be crated because he eats things he shouldn't (bits of toys, blankets, balls, etc.) but Roxy is a barker. And she's brindle. She would be shot in an instant, I have no doubt. I'd like to think her being contained to a crate would ensure that an officer that had to enter my house for whatever reason would NOT shoot her, no matter how much noise she makes in there. But this study does make me wonder if someone would shoot her anyway, just because they are scared and / or ignorant...

The story on page 7 broke my heart and also reconfirmed why I still crate Inara (one of the reasons) - I have an alarm system, and god forbid it gets tripped, I want Inara safely crated when the police show up.
The only thing that made me cringe was where it said to dress your dog up like a service dog so it looks friendlier. *bangs head on wall*

This article flashed to mind for me yesterday. My house was broken into and the alarm system was tripped. When I got home (in an absolute panic as of course I was thinking they'd hurt or stolen Inara) the police were in my house. Nothing was taken fortunately, and both animals were fine, thank god. But the police said I should leave Inara out as she'd be a good deterrent. So I explained that I worry that if somebody breaks in and she's loose that they'll be more likely to hurt her. And what I was thinking was, "and what would you guys have done if she'd come bounding over when you walked in the house?" So so so thankful I still crate.

OMG Liz, I'm so glad you and Inara are okay. I am so sorry, how terrifying. And yeah that is an idiotic thing for the police to have said.

Thanks girls. It was pretty scary. The cops were really nice and just trying to be helpful. They said that they certainly wouldn't mess with her. That's okay though, I think her bark is what actually scared the guy(s) into leaving and tripping the alarm.
