I got home today to find a patch of fur missing from Blanca's neck. She has been shedding excessively but this is the first I've noticed this. I walk her with a harness at least three times a day and this is the only time I have seen this. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow but was wondering has anyone has any information on a condition like this. She has been eating Purina One Smart Blend since I've had her so I don't think diet is an issue. Thanks for any information Andrew

Does she wear a collar a lot of the time? This will sometimes happen to my dog Winston if he wears a collar for too long.(too long could be a couple days to a week, or a month) He has sensitive skin and allergies, as it is and I guess the collar just irritates the skin or something. If she does wear one, try leaving it off more often, and wash it.
If she doesn't wear one, and only the harness to go outside, I would go ahead and wash that. It's possible something bit her and made her scratch herself enough to cause this too. It's hard telling the actual cause.
Has it gotten worse, more redness etc? Does she scratch at it still? If she is still having issues with it, try bathing her with a skin sensitive dog shampoo. I'd also put triple antibiotic cream on it. If it gets worse or spreads, I'd call the vet to make sure there isn't an infection that needed antibiotics.
Like I said, my dog Winston has sensitive skin and allergies. I take care of a lot of it with bathes, topical creams, (triple antibiotic, or hydrocortisone)a spray called Vetricyn, and cleaning his bedding, and washing his food bowl daily. When he starts to look like he's having allergic symptoms, I use benedryl, if that doesn't help, then I go to the vet and he goes on steroid medication or antibiotics.

She rarely wears her collar, but the vet did say she has allergies. I will have to remember to wash her harness more often. The vet did a skin scrape and found no mites or fleas. She was given antihistamines and an antibiotic for her irritation and a calming mousse to apply to the red area. The vet wasn't absolutely sure of the allergy so I was advised to change her food to an allergy diet. There was no change in her behaviour, so hopefully the will clear up rather quickly.
Thanks for your response.

Sorry I missed this before. Glad that the vet did a scraping and found no mites. Clearly it is allergies to what is the question! Did you vet rec. a new food?

Sorry, I just saw this too. This breed is very prone to skin allergies. Did the vet put her on Science Diet L/I? We have tons of food recommendations on this forum if you'd like some. TBH, Purina is not a good brand, and Science Diet is pretty awful, too. A lot of skin issues can be cleared up just with the right diet.

The vet had me change her diet to Natural Balance LID. I chose the sweet potato and fish. The vet suggested that I stay clear of beef and chicken for now.

Ok good! Natural Balance was a good choice, I'm happy to hear that's what the vet recommended

Blanca's neck has cleared up nicely. I believe the changing of her food helped a lot. Her stool is solid, the shedding and scratching has subsided dramatically and she has always been energetic. I didn't let her finish the medication because she always seemed drowsy with them. She love being rubbed with the soothing mousse. She is in great spirits now.
Thanks to all for the concern of my little stinker
