Ok so most of you know my son's dog Crooks comes to stay w us often and while we don't know his exact age -the vet told us beteween 5-9yrs almost two years ago - we are thinking he is on the higher end of that. He has been displaying some shoulder soreness when he gets up or after walks very frequently now. For one thing my son overfeeds him and he is at the very top of where he should be close to 70 lbs - he was much more rangier when we first got him. He needs to lose some weight for one I know. Wanted to know about giving MSM, glucosamine, something like that to dogs - anyone have experience or recommendations? Mary, I thought I saw going through some old threads that Luca had some joint soreness? This dog is still such an athelete and lives for running and physical activity and i want to make sure the time he has left is as quality as possible.

I used Cosequin DS for Luca with good results. As a bonus, he loved the chewable tabs. I know some others in here have used various liquid MSM/glucosamine with good results, too. Michele and Maryellen probably would have good recommendations.

Sorry to hear about Crooks. I have used Synflex in the past and now use Dasaquin. They have two formulations one with MSM and one with out. You could also just buy regular Glucosamine.

We use Dasaquin with MSM for Buster. He has some hind-end joint issues, and that in conjunction with only having one front leg to walk on, we started him on the joint supplements earlier. We tried something else before that, and I didn't see much of a difference (I don't remember what). Also, Buster has a very sensitive stomach and GI tract, we believe it's IBD but it's unconfirmed, and thankfully the Dasaquin with MSM doesn't cause any GI upset. The other stuff we used did cause GI issues for him, in addition to being less effective for him.
I have also heard good reviews of Cosequin DS, but we haven't tried it. For Buster, when we find something that works and doesn't cause GI upset, we don't try other things! LOL
