Is anyone familiar with this rescue? www.crossedpawsrescue.com/They're advertising dogs for this rescue. scotlandhumane.org/The adoption fee is $250 and transportation fee is $175 by Howl on Wheels Transport. To me that's a little steep. Am I the only one who thinks that a total of $425 to adopt a dog is a bit much? Also, because they don't have a way for you to meet the dog before to adopt it.

I think it's a lot especially because it is not a breed rescue. We ended up paying $350 for my mom's Saint from a Giant dog rescue. But, with all the shots, spay, etc., it was still a great deal for a purebred Saint who had been temperament tested and also driven 2 hours to us.
I'm sure, though, that the fee does not cover all the rescue's expenses and I don't think they're profiting from it!

I think it depends on the area you're in. Where I am people balk at $85. Some rescues base adoption fees based on breed/demand and age. But $250 does seem a bit high, like adoptapitbull said, for a non breed rescue. But yeah, they're not making money once you consider the cost of vetting, feeding, housing etc. I personally wouldn't be likely to chose them since I wouldn't' be able to meet the dog first. I'd like to know me and the dog click.

Yeah, I think the biggest thing for me is the chemistry. I feel a little awkward not meeting the pup first. The dog is only 8 weeks old and that doesn't include neutering so that's why I feel it's a little steep. Plus the shelter that the dog is coming from is in NC, I find it hard to believe the going rate for adopting a dog down there would be ~$250.

The fee doesn't sound unreasonable to me. It's towards the "high" end as far as I'm concerned, but a lot of groups will charge more for puppies. Also the transport fee is low if you compare to shipping a dog through an airline.
Having said that, I'd be SUPER careful with rescues who ship dogs up from the south to homes sight-unseen. Lots of shady business and sick dogs getting dumped.

Agree fee does not sound that bad esp. since you have to pay a transport fee. To reiterate what Mary said a lot of sick dogs coming from the south...esp. with heartworm as it is so prevalent in the South.

And fhis takes away from the dogs up here in shelters and rescues that need homes. Sorry this is a peeve of mine. Too many good dogs right here need homes yet rescues pull dogs from down south and ignore the ones here. Nyacc euths dogs every day why cant rescues save those doggs right here

Good points everyone. I emailed them to see what they can do about me meeting the dog. We'll see what they say.

Ehhhh....yeah, I don't know...it feels sketchy now with those details. I know a lot of people who've rescued from the south, NC in a lot of cases, and the dogs were very sick and all had major issues. I think everyone should meet a dog and spend a bit of time with it to see if you "click" so to speak. And you can point out any issues you see right there before the deal is signed, and not have countless e-mails ignored once you discover a secret problem. Been there, done that!

Did you get the landlord insurance issue cleared up and in writing?

While i know you are eager for a dog there is no need to rush go slow and research carefully...there is no need to rush into it

Honestly, I don't think I could adopt a dog sight unseen. Maybe a young puppy, but even then, there are plenty of pups local, of all breeds, and I would want to meet him/her first. I met Roxy before adopting her and I had no clue what I was looking for medically, or looking at behaviorally, and I was blatantly lied to about numerous things. She also turned out to have worms (tapes, whips, and rounds!!!) even though she was supposedly deformed 2x in the previous month. There were adult worms of all three types, as well, so it wasn't a new infection. She also had ear allergy / infections that you could see when looking in the ears. All of those things I paid for at the vet, not realizing that if I had known to look when meeting her, the rescue could have and should have paid for or provided the treatment since she'd been in here care for 4 months+.... It's definitely better to take your time and explore locally if you can, and meet dogs first!!

I've spoken to the landlord verbally, I'm working on getting something in writing however I'm doubtful that'll happen because it's coming from his insurance company. After speaking with my wife, we decided not to go with the pup from NC for all the reasons talked about above. I've been speaking to few different rescues up here to see what they have available. Once again, you guys rock and have helped me greatly. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future and I know you guys/gals won't steer me wrong. BTW does anyone have any dog supplies that they don't use anymore? I'd gladly pay for them, I'm sure I'll find something soon and I want to be prepared when I do.
Thanks!

Do not get a dogo unless you have it in writing from the insurance co. Nothing in writing = you have no leg to stand on and you will have to rehome the dog

I'm not looking at Dogo's anymore. Turns out they're very hard to find around here. lol
However from what everyone is telling me no matter what I won't have a leg to stand on. If someone from the insurance company peeks through my window and thinks what they see a Pit Bull I'm up a creek either way.
I'm looking at mutt right now he's young so they're not sure what he is. They think his dad was a black lab and mom maybe a boxer. We'll see as he grows up.

Chubby's adoption fee was $250. Which I thought was high at first too, but then I found out they were caring for him for nearly a year before he was adopted, they neutered him, they got him healthy again (he was a boney and bald mess when they found him). I know if I had to neuter him at my own cost it would have been a lot more than $250.
