Winston has done amazing with is allergies since I put him on Blue Buffalo and/or Merrick Lamb & Apple. I switched jobs, took a pay cut, and am in the middle of getting caught up on pay periods. So money is tight. I bought a bag 35lb of 4 Health Lamb & Rice a few weeks ago (on sale for 27) instead of spending 60 on 30lb Blue Buffalo. All was fine with the dogs, so I bought another bag, off sale is $33. Now Winston is starting to scratch and dig at himself. It is also harvest season, and there is a lot of dust and debris in the air. Allergies are kicking my but...I wake up with such dry eyes they barely open, even with the rain! So I don't know if it is the actual dog food or airborn issues with Winston. The last bag had very little debris at the bottom of the bag. (he has storage mite issues) His only other allergy is a mold found in wheat, but it isn't wheat harvesting right now. Just corn, beans, etc.
He's not bad, but I've started benedryl. Hopefully I can afford a bag of BB or Merrick for him soon. I think I'll keep the other two dogs on the 4Health brand since they are fine. I just wish I had timed this a bit better so I could know if it is the food or seasonal with him.

You can try other antihistamines. Zyrtec, Allegra and Claritin were all recommended by my vet. Different dosages, let me know if you need more info.

dosemypet.com/dosage/for-dogs/zyrtec/0 – 15 lb dog – 5 mg to be administered once a day. 16 – 39 lb dog – 10 mg to be administered once a day. Dogs 40 lbs and over – 10 mg to be administered twice a day. It can't be Zyrtec-D. It has to be JUST the plain Zyrtec.

Cool. Of all the times my dog has been to the vet for allergies, why has not a single one offered advice on alternate meds? It's always Benedryl, or temeril! Going to try this tonight. He hasn't had anything yet today.

You need a better vet. Mine is so terrific! As well as being extremely experienced in conventional veterinary medicine, she is holistic, alt meds, herbal, accupuncture and accupressure savvy. Seems like she's always educating herself still. ANnnnND, she loves my dogs. If the Zyrtec doesn't seem to work, try one of the other ones. Dosing may be different.

It took about an hour before I noticed a difference. He slept well, no midnight itchy scratchy time!
I would love a better vet. While I do like mine, and appreciate her... the area is seriously lacking a great small animal vet/clinic. I do go to a different one that is 75 miles away for more serious issues, but even they stop at temeril. All of the food changes, supplements, etc came from advice from people here, and researching the web.
I'll be moving *fingers crossed* by this time next year. Hopefully I can locate a good small animal vet!

I think 4health also makes a grain free variety.... probably more than the non-grain-free version but certainly cheaper than blue buffalo or merrick.
