First thing this morning I let my dogs out. Usually they're right back inside to eat.
Not today. They wouldn't even come in when called, so I went out to see what was going on.
In a tshirt and no pants I peek around the corner to the one part of the yard I can't see. There I see Winston and Cleveland snuffling a dead cat their snuffling is on the verge of escalating as River is running around trying to get in on the action. Cleveland snaps out at Winston, he snaps back. I ran inside and grabbed pants, then back outside to turn the hose on.
By that time tug of war started between Winston and Cleveland. River was just running around watching, but once I hit her with the water she went to the porch. Cleveland let go and I kept him away by spraying him. But Winston would not let go of the cat. He dragged it onto the porch as if to take it inside. I hated to spray him like I did, but the only way I could keep him off the cat was to spray him in the face. Through a lot of harshly growled commands and holding/dragging Cleveland and River by the collars did I finally get them inside and crated.
I grabbed a garbage bag, and disposable gloves and dealt with the cat. I examined the cat and have no idea what killed it. It wasn't stiff and had no blood etc on it.
I do know that I am beyond effing pissed. Pretty sure this is the cat that has tormented my dogs all year. It has an owner, a shitty fenced in yard (with chicken wire) with a play area. He's just missing his collar and ID.
I could brush this off as a freak occurrence, but...
The other day I left for work at 8 am, stepped out the front door and there on the path to my door sat an empty dairy queen cup, an empty paper plate, and a single serving apple sauce, nicely opened and un-spilled.
My first worry was that the apple sauce was poisoned. I picked everything up and put it in the trash.
I do know the neighbors across the way dislike the dogs. For what ever reason, after living here 5 years, they set up a picnic table and fire pit on the side of their house that is visible to my dogs. (not the other side which is larger and more secluded or back yard) They have been outside a lot this summer, plus we've had an explosion of stray cats. Which get the dogs riled up. Cleveland tends to bark at the neighbors once in awhile. More if they're being obnoxious.
I know they have every right to be outside and enjoy their yard, but I get pissed that they get pissed at me. They have a lot more yard to utilize than what they did. And my dogs have a right to be outside in their yard as well!
I'm just pissed that a cat is dead. I'm going to have to get up earlier to go check my yard before I let the dogs out.
