The sign that will be put out is Dogs are friendly - Beware of owner armed with PMS and a Glock.

Beware of dog signs; in my opinion, merely suggests there is a dog on the premises, not that he is a biter.....it forwarns people to caution whether or not its a biter.... I do like the "dog on premises" better than "beware of dog" sign...the law goes easier on people who have beware of dog signs,if any person disregards the sign and walks into the premises the owner is not to blame... that is the law here in california.. One day a Jehohvahs witness jumped over my padlocked cow gate...my pitty was then 7 months old but looked full grown... the dog was too friendly but he initially did not know that and to top that off there was a beware of dog sign on the gate , the idiot paid no heed to it........with idiots out there, do we really need signs? ..go figure....

I never would have thought about the possible legal implications of a "Beware of Dog" sign. I don't have such a sign, but after reading this I would definitely get one more along the lines of "Dog on Premises."
I do have the signs for the firefighters though. I think those are really important if anything were to happen. I suggest the ones that specify how many of each type of animal you have. My neighbour's has dogs, cats, turtles and fish on it lol!
I can't believe that Mississippi burglar story. That is absolutely disgusting. The American legal system has gone right off the deep end. Sure, put people in prison for possession of drugs, but award a settlement to a burglar...that makes sense.

Really seems like a bass ackward society we live in sometimes, huh.

i hope your dogs lissa are not loose alone together in the garage? They are left "home alone" together in a gated off portion of the garage with doggy door access to their play area. They don't have access to anything that can hurt'em inside the garage. I trust the two of them together a 110%. Hazel mothers Blue like a puppy. I know some people will disagree with how or where I keep my dogs when I leave the house but their accommodations are excellent (sometimes they don't want to come in because they're having a hoot playing together in and out of the garage). Besides, Blue tends to have separation anxiety if left alone too long (aka, boredom destruction).

I have this sign. Of course all of my dogs are contained in their runs 'cept Tank who is on a long chain so he can guard my oh so viscious pit bulls. But I have heard that having a Beware of Dog sign means you are admitting to having a viscious /dangerous dog

lol honestly, that sign doesn't leave the most innocent impression, as much as I do see the humor in it.

I just love it although after this thread I'm scared to out ANY sign up!

I think that one implies the same thing...
If I decided to put a sign up it would either be something relating to dogs and gates, "Dogs in yard, keep gate closed" or "Dogs on premises" and the only breed specific one I would use (which hangs on Cajun's crate at events) is the yellow diamond shaped "Pit Bull Xing" with a sillouette pibble.

Whether a beware of dog sign helps the owner or hurts depends on the law of the state where you live. In Florida it helps you, so much so that the post office will not deliver to your door if you have a Bad Dog sign in the yard. The reason: the postman does not want to have to deal with the defense your sign gives you.

I guess the moral of the story is: Know the Laws in your State!

lissa, all i am going to say is i hope to god your dogs dont get into a fight when you are not home and you come home to a disaster.... while you know your dogs, with this breed it takes the slightest thing to maybe set one off, and why take that chance? even if one has SA, you can crate them near each other ..

haha, my mail lady doesn't deliver my mail even though she knows Lucy very well when she is outside w/o me. I think it has to do with the fact that Lucy barks like crazy at everyone, even people she knows and loves when they come near the house. And believe me, I HATE it. One bark is okay, maybe a few if she can't see who it is, but she barks like crazy. But once they get close enough, she gets all submissive, ears down, crouched, even pees sometimes. I think it would be a bad idea if I put a sign up.

tank, your pup needs some confidence building.. by allowing her to bark at strangers you are not helping her at all. redirect her to stop barking, like work on some training .. the submissive, ears down, crouched , pee is all a sign of FEAR...

I don't allow her to bark at anyone. If she hears something I allow her to bark once, because suppressing her barking when she thinks something is wrong is really horrible training. She has submissively peed since we got her at 2 months old, and we have worked really hard to train her out of it. That's not my point, I was saying the mail lady doesn't deliver my mail if she is outside even though she knows her.

I actually have a Beware of Dog sign at the end of my drive way. Not because any of my dogs are mean but beacause my 8 year old Black Lab mix named Molly is funny with strangers. When people see a Lab or a Lab looking dog they assume that the dog is friendly and immediatly reach down to pet it. Im afraid someone would pull up to my house when I have the dogs loose, get out of there car and while Molly is sniffing them try to pet her before I can say anything. I dont think Molly would bite someone but I simply dont know! Ever since I put the sign up, people wait for me to get the dogs contained before they even get out of the car. It gives me peace of mind.

I have a bumper sticker on my car (among other pit bull stickers) which reads: 'Dog is friendly, Beware of owner' If I could find that on a sign, I'd prolly post it on my fence.
