There's no reason behind Dixie's name, but Jason LOVES the movie Top Gun, so that's the reason behind Maverick's name. ;D

Cajun was originally listed as George by the folks with his rescue group and the name just really didn't fly with me. So I re-named him Cajun. He was a Katrina hurricane rescue, born at an outdoor makeshift shelter in New Orleans about a month after the storm hit. I named him Cajun because of where he is from (louisiana is *the* Cajun state) and also as a play on words. The 'Cajun rules' are a set of rules which describe "proper" dogfighting ettiquite and proper procedure for dog fighting among dogmen. So the play on words was not to promote the "Cajun rules" but to say "Cajun rules!" as an ambassador of the breed, which he certainly is. Cajun's sister came to us at age 5 months and was already named Jasmine which she knew and we kept. Sort of fits the entire New Orleans theme as one of her nicknames is "Jazz". Personally, I'm a big fan of names with meanings, especially Gaelic names but we're very happy with the names we chose and inherited. Course, I got a kitten when I was one year old who my mother named Hemmorhoids (b/c he was a pain in the arse) and he lived for 26 years. We frequently found tubes of preparation H in our mailbox, apparently left there by neighbors who felt sorry for us after we called him inside to eat. Names can say alot...about the pet and apparently about the owners.

I picked Odie because of my cat garfield, and because Odie has similar coloration to the little dog in the garfield movies. Odie's registered name is Lil' Goons Deebo and I couldn't keep the name Deebo, I hate it. But that is what the breeder has him listed as because of the previous owners wanted his registered name to be. Odie suits him so much better because he's goofy and is always giving you that look of woe is me.

My oldest, Zoe, was originally called Reese (as in Reese's Pieces) and Peanut by the rescue groups, but I did not like those names at all. Zoe has no special meaning...I just always liked the name, and really like people names for animals Sierra got her name because of her razor-sharp baby teeth (Sierra means "saw" in Spanish...my bf is from South America). Koda just sounded right for her...she's a tough girl, not girly at all. My cat's name is my favourite though "Stella." I named her after my favourite beer, Stella Artois

Deja's name came as a derivative of another name I had heard years ago when I was with my ex. The roommate's friend had gotten a pup from the same litter as his dog and named her Doja (like doh-ja). I kinda liked the name but not really. When my ex got his dog (the one who really intro'd me to the breed) I wanted to name her Deja Roo since he was insistent on naming her Roo-something. He didn't approve so I socked it away for another day. Naturally, when we split and I was ready for a dog, I went for a young lady and her name would be Deja. And it is Cyrus...well, he'd come with his name. We were too lazy to change it and really, we don't mind. Let's see, there was a foster pooch I had who I named Tino. I had a sh*tty day at work and went to the shelter to drop off some info for them. She asked if I wanted to go into the back and that's where I met him. On Valentine's Day. Valentino was too overused so I shortened it to Tino. That dog is awesome! Then, there's Mia. The shelter had named her Marsha Umm....no way no how. Kat and I deliberated on it for a while and just couldn't figure out what to name her. After dropping her back off at her house, it just nailed me while I was driving - Mia. To me, it signified a youthful, positive personality and it stuck. Then, there's another pooch that we didn't get out of the shelter but we had been trying (the shelter actually wound up adopting him out ). I had named him Vinnie. Poor guy was relatively young and had a halfway decent crop job done but they didn't tape his ears or do anything to follow through with making sure the work that went into them was worth it. SO sensitive. Not sure why I chose to name him Vinnie. Now, there IS a reason that I'm mentioning what I've named the fosters and the one pooch we were trying to get out. Kat slapped me around one day and started joking that I had Mafia affiliations because of the names I was choosing for these dogs! I laugh about it because it was totally unintentional and funny because of it, but I'm much more mindful these days lol!

LOL @ Mafia affilliations. I get asked about Luca's name all the time. He isn't named AFTER Luca Brasi from The Godfather, but I liked the name and I am a fan of the movies and Mafia flix in general, PLUS I *am* Italian, so.... Krash came with the name Crash from his breeder, but I HATED it. I had all these names picked out but when it came down to it, none of them fit. So I kept Crash, but changed the C to a K and made it Krash. And really, the name fit him and I grew to seriously love it. My other dogs' names (all passed)....let's see if I can remember..... Rocky (stray mixed breed) was named after Rocky Balboa, because the first or second film had just come out. Pooky (stray Dobe mix) was originally named Spooy because we found him around Halloween time and he had kind of an intense face. That morphed into Pooky soon, though. Cherry (adopted shelter Terrier mix) was named by my borther - have no idea why he choce that name, but he WAS only like 6 at the time LOL Kavek ('rescued' pet shop Siberian Husky - we didn't know better at the time and thought we were doing the dog a favor!) - named after the dog in the movie Kavik the Wolfdog, but we changed the spelling. Rinnie (originally my great-uncle's dog, and my grandfather purchased him from my uncle for me) - I was and am a Rin Tin Tin fan, soooo....there ya go He was my first GSD. Tyler (a Shetland Sheepdog, gift from a breeder-friend) - dog ended up becoming my uncle's dog. This is they name he came with. Rocky Junior, aka RJ (stray cock-a-poo) - I found the dog, he became my uncle's. Named after Rocky above. I think that's everyone LOL Names mean a LOT to me too, and I choose them very carefully. I actually have a list of potential dog names, their meanings, etc. LOL

Kaeda is shortened for AvadaKaedavra out of Harry Potter series. The unforgivable curse that results in instant death. It was used as a total joke because here I had this little red nose puppy that weave in and out of your legs causing you to fall then lick you to death. She is also one of the biggest pansies I know.
Toshka is Shortened Slovak tongue for the innocent killed. Basically wrongly accused.

When we got our female, she had already been named by the breeder ( :-[ BYB) and that name was Nia. Well I have a 12 year old daughter named Mia, so we decided it was too close to keep the name. I figured every time I yell for my daughter, the dog would get confused. So we asked the kids for some suggestions. We ended up having to decide between Lily, and Lola. We went with Lily for a day, and it didn't seem right. So we switched to Lola, and it stuck. My boy was already named Reed when we got him from the rescue, and although I wasn't fond of the name, he responded well to it. So we kept it. It's not so bad anymore.

Tank came with his name when I inherited him from a former friend who was scared he would eat their new baby (duh) Tonka cuz she's my little tonka toy! hehe and its cute.
SYKs Firin on all Cylinders aka Piston cuz well...she's crazy, has ENDLESS energy, will play fetch for HOURS up HOURS. so she needed a good energy name, and her previous name was Pearl so I wanted to keep her call name close to that.
Pulldawgs Urban Combat aka Combat, He just needed a really cool manly big dog sounding name. I like militaryish names and I subscribe to a magazine called Urban Combat and it happen to be laying on the table when he arrived lol. the Pulldawg is just the kennel that bred him

It took us 2 weeks to name Lucy. We wanted to get to know her and have her find her own name, before she was named we just called her puppy and little girl. The name Lucy continued to pop in my head over and over, but I was hesitant to name her that because it is such a popular dog's name, but I just had to name her that. The name was so perfect for her and she learned it the same day I first used it. We also decided her full name was going to be Lucifer, because she has "crazy bitch eyes" as it was said by one of my friends who also has pits. I call her Lucifer James, just because I like the sound of it, but my boyfriend hates it when I call her that because I have a weird thing with gender names with my animals.
My last dog was named Bela, after Bela Lugosi who played Dracula. He was a Boston terrier and also had HUGE ears that reminded me of bat wings, hence the Dracula reference. I had to explain it to everyone who asked me his name. "Oh what a cute dog, what's his name?" "Bela" "Oh, I mean her name, sorry" "no, Bela is a boy, named after blah blah blah..." I don't regret it for a second though. When we got him his name was "Bullet" because he darted around like a bullet I guess, and I just wasn't comfortable with that name, it sounded awkward.
I have had female rats names Elvis(obvious) and Petey (dog on little rascals) and the last ferrets I had were named Malekai, Rocco(nick show, although he was more like spunky, thought that name was too weird to use), Bing (he came with that name) and Fat baby (fattest, most stupid ferret ever, literally, that was originally named macaroni but turned out more like a ziti)
