Sooo....browsing through pix in books and online, what are some of the dogs from the 'olden days' that just popped out at you and made you take note? For me, I have always loved Colby's Galtie. I would love to have a little guy like this!

Who also feels that Helen Keller's dog (as posted here) was an Olde Boston Bulldogge? Historically, speaking? I'm not a huge study of bloodlines, though I really appreciate them. Solely from pictures, a few I really am drawn to are: Colby dogs in general but mainly the really correct piebalds. Bumatay's Sumantha, the lovely baldy I like alot of the Wallace (esp Red Brave) and Wise dogs My focus began with AKC conformation lines with some outside working lines thrown in Rotties, Dobes and GSDs. I fell in love with the APBT without really getting into tracing bloodlines but it's becoming more interesting to me, especially with the state our breed is in (breeders claiming all and everything and the shift in general dog knowledge and breed respect). Can't wait to see what you others post here, as I am learning as I go in this topic.

Jessica, I'm with you, I think Keller's dog was a Boston, but remember, back then, Bostons, BTs and APBTs were all kinda considered 'bull n terrier' types, which could easily be translated by some as 'Pit Bull'. I have heard countless people claim Keller's dog was a Pit Bull, it is 'common knowledge'. Yet the pic says otherwise..........

I guess my issue is that so many glom onto corralling the 'pit bull' for "this breed isn't so bad"..."here's the proof..."///"IF Hellen Keller owned one, that makes them gold.."
I see time and time again (as we all do) perfectly suitable and heroic pit bulls who blur into the background but then supposed breed advocates try to claim them across the board.
I guess I'm just a member of the 'call it for what it is' and give respect where it is due.
SO many pit bull sites list "famous" pit bull owners and many of the 'pit bulls' supposedly owned by these glorious (ha) people were so far from true APBTs it's just not fair.
Does this make me sound like a train jumper??

Who also feels that Helen Keller's dog (as posted here) was an Olde Boston Bulldogge? ... what's an Olde Boston Bulldogge? To me, in that picture, it looks like a possible Boston bull terrier, or APBT

That one may be a Boston. This could be the one with her pit bull. The picture isn't as clear. And here's one with her GSD:

Here's one with a Boston and a pit bull, to show how similar they used to be.

oh for sure .. when I used to shop ebay for pit bull stuff, I always used "boston terrier" as key words as well. Amazing how often you really couldn't tell if the dog is an APBT or a Boston. APBTs were trypically smaller, and Bostons bigger and had a snout,

I love this painting....not really a Pit Bull, more like an old time Boston? But a bull-n-terrier, nonetheless. From the Pitbullsontheweb.com site:

I have that one saved on my computer and on my photobucket as well, even though a barrel with straw is not appropriate shelter.
