last night was kinda cold here in Wisconsin, 6 degrees, i took my buddy tank to go for a little walk, and to pee. we got 5 mins into the walk and his little feet must have got to cold, he was yelping and whining. and limping on 3 feet at a time. i ending up carrying him home the rest of the way to the warm house. i got on the net to find out if there was a place to get boots/socks for my doggy... little did i know... there is a whole site dedicated to his very purpose/ they have jackets too... and some other sweet stuff. OK sorry it was so long. here is the link: www.dogbooties.com/index.html

Those things are cool, especially for protecting paws from ice melt etc, but most dogs will not keep them on. Keep that in mind if you order them online before trying them on your pup. I used to work in a pet store and 90% of pet booties we sold got returned because the dog wouldn't keep them on. Don't get me wrong, those look like high quality, just keep that in mind.

Hi all, Here in Kentucky we usually have relatively mild winters, but sometimes it can get down to the single digits or below due to the high winds we get here on the farm where I rent. I've always put doggy coats on my pit bullies here. They don't have the undercoat like other breeds, such as my GSD and Beagle. I find they can't endure the cold & wind here very much and they get chilled really fast. So they get walked with coats and only go in the kennel for brief times unless it is and the temps are above 40 degrees. Maybe I just plain spoil them?? I just feel so sorry to see them outside in the cold and be shivering and cold. I've also tried the dog boots of various brands/types, I've not had any luck with the dogs keeping them on either. They always seem to come off, or else the dogs just plain don't like them and pull them off themselves. When it is really cold & icy I try walking them on the grassy areas iinstead of cement or gravel (colder). Keep in mind that dogs can get frost bite in their feet and so even if they are out in very cold weather it should not be for long periods and you need to keep checking their feet for frostbite. Also, I put a big cheap area rug outside my door for them to "sit" while they wait for me to open the door. You'd be surprised how fast they learn that on a cold day/night they can sit on the rug instead of the cement and be more comfortable. Also, inside the door I have another big cheap area rug for them to sit on, too. These rugs can be shaken out, sweep clean and thrown in the washing machine and they dry pretty fast, too. In winter my dogs also have double comforters in their dog crates, to that I add a snuggly crocheted blankie (find them in Thrift stores) and their teddy bear or the like to snuggle with. I also cover their crates with heavy blankets to help keep out drafts. They seem to really love snuggling in their "dens". (Also, my cat loves to sleep in the snuggly dog crates). ; 0 )) beloved bullies here in kentucky where right now rain/sleet/snow is coming in......

I would love to find booties that actually stay on! Luca could definitely use some.

I have Muttluks brand which stay on pretty well. They have tall, knitted legwarmer cuffs and velcro straps. Sometimes one will come off during a zoomies fest, but otherwise they stay on.
There is also a brand that has suspender straps that go up and around the body, but I can't remember what they are called.
For coats, I like to put on a Fido Fleece under a horse blanket style coat, with a sweater or t-shirt underneath if it is really cold.
If anyone finds something to keep the ears warm and from being chapped, PLEASE let me know. This is the biggest problem I have, especially with Aiden. And the dogs are rarely outside.

Just a day or two ago I was wishing I had ear muffs for Luca! His little ear tips looked SO cold (and felt colder). It hasn't even been that cold out, and I cringe thinking about how icy they must get on even short walks (like your dogs, he's not outside all that much).

Maybe Snoods or legwarmers (LOL!!!) for the natural dogs, but they wouldn't work on my cropped boy.

oh I really like the idea of snoods to keep their ears warm, that's really good ! Hmmm. Am wondering if you could use Bag Balm for the chapped ears? Maybe a thin film of it? If you don't know what Bag Balm is, well, it is a salve that is used basically for cows teats when they get dry. Most farmers & horse people use it for chapped hands, I even put it on my face in cold weather. (??) It stops chapping & skin from cracking. ?? Just an idea. Any input on this anyone? I've never seen my pit bulls get chapped or dry ears. ?? Maybe because they are in the house most of the time in cold weather and only out to do their business and get a little exercise on cold/windy days. ??? Thanks for all the great ideas ! beloved bullies here in kentucky

Ok, I just went to that website with the hoodies and coats. What an awesome site, loved the rain slicker and the hoodie too. Wish I had known about these when I had Stevie Wunder, he had such a thin coat and so little chest hair, thanks for sharing the site ! beloved bullies here in kentucky

Be careful with Bag Balm, as it contains lanolin and can clog the pores. Aiden's ears actually got worse with it instead of better. I am now using Kiss My Face, which is an all natural human brand of lotion you can get at health food stores (and some other places). The vet said to use lotion instead of ointment.
