TAMARAC, Fla. -- A man shot and killed a pit bull in Tamarac on Thursday after the dog reportedly got loose and attacked him.
A man who asked to be referred to as "John" was surprised when he returned home to find that his pit bull, Trouble, was dead after attacking and hospitalizing a man.
"How did my dog get out of the cage?" John said.
Paulo Jean, 35, was taken to a hospital after police said the pit bull bit Jean on both arms and his rear end.
"I feel bad for Paulo," John said. "I need to know what's going on with Paulo."
Investigators said the pit bull likely escaped from a screened area behind a Tamarac home on the 4500 block of Northwest 16th Way.
Police said when the dog got out, children in the neighborhood started screaming and Jean ran out of his home, only to be attacked.
Police said Jean was legally armed and fired back, killing the dog.
"(I heard) like, just popping," said neighbor Louanne Griffith. "I could tell it was a gun."
"I heard the gunshots," said neighbor Fred Pulver. "We saw the guy walking back from his house and his arm was all chewed up, and then he fell on his porch."
Unlike in Miami-Dade County, owning a pit bull is legal in Broward County.
"I don't think they should allow them," said neighbor Shannon Henne. "There are too many attacks in general, and this was a person where it could have been a kid."
Trouble was apparently known in the neighborhood to have a split personality. Neighbors said he was sometimes friendly and sometimes aggressive.
Investigators were still trying to determine whether the dog's owner will face any charges.
