Abused pit bull may undergo surgery Posted by The Republican Newsroom January 11, 2008 12:24PM By GEORGE GRAHAM ggraham@repub.com SPRINGFIELD - An abused puppy, tossed through a third-floor window of a Winter Street apartment yesterday, will be taken to Boston for assessment by an orthopedic specialist. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, meanwhile, is seeking contributions to defray the cost of surgery to the puppy, now dubbed Smitty. Surgery could cost as much as $5,000, Candy H. Lash, a spokeswoman for the MSPCA, said. The male pit bull, about seven or eight weeks old, suffered a broken leg and fractured skull, Lash said. The puppy is stable, but was in pain throughout the night, Lash said. Police said they have a "person of interest" in the case but an arrest has yet to be made. Dr. David Knapp of the Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston will determine whether the puppy is old enough for surgery, Lash said. If surgery is not yet appropriate, given growth considerations, the puppy will go into foster care pending its readiness to undergo surgery. Donations to a special MSPCA fund, known as the Frankie Fund, can be made online by going to www.mspca.org. Donations to the Frankie Fund, labeled for Smitty, can also be sent to the MSPCA - Western New England, 171 Union St., Springfield, MA 01105. Those seeking to inquire about permanently adopting the puppy can call (413) 736-2992.

And an update on Smitty (click the link for a pic of the cutey!) www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1066073&srvc=rssA tough-as-nails pit bull puppy fell three stories after being tossed from a Springfield apartment building - and lived to bark about it. The 7-week-old pup, which rescuers named Smitty, landed on the pavement, suffering a fractured skull and a broken front and rear left leg Thursday morning. Springfield Police rushed him to the MSPCA’s Western New England Animal Care and Adoption Center. Cops have a suspect in the case. Smitty was transferred to MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Medical Center in Boston and will require checkups every two weeks. You can track his progress by logging onto www.mspca.org/smitty“Many of the pit bulls we encounter are loving, caring animals,” said Brian Adams of MSPCA-Angell
