Jan Cronkhite used to enjoy long walks with her dogs down the Poudre Trail. Now she's not sure if she'll ever walk down there again.
Her dogs were attacked Sunday by three dogs believed to be pit bull mixes as she walked by on the trail near the section where it crosses 35th Avenue, police officers and Cronkhite said.
"I was trying to fight them off," said Cronkhite of Kersey, "but they just wouldn't stop. They just wouldn't stop biting. I'm just ."
Cronkhite's black lab and German shepherd mix, Rex, escaped to her truck with a bite to the neck, which will only need a few staples, but Harley, a border collie that belongs to her son, will be in the emergency vet clinic in Evans for a few days with severe bites to his neck and thigh.
"The thigh bite is down to his bone," Cronkhite said. "They don't know if he will be able to walk."
David McCann, 41, of Greeley was cited for three counts of owning a vicious animal, said Greeley police Sgt. Adam Turk. McCann was bitten three times, on the right elbow, right hand and right wrist, and accounts differed as to whether he went to the hospital for the bites or not, although none appeared to be too severe. Cronkhite also was bitten on the finger and discovered some scratches on her legs, although those injures weren't severe either.
McCann's dogs were impounded, although one was taken to the emergency clinic with minor injuries, and a hearing will be soon to determine whether he will get to keep his dogs.
Cronkhite said McCann's dogs were leashed as well as hers and that McCann did try to fight off his dogs.
"He was hitting them," she said. "He kept saying 'Get out, get out,' but I wasn't going to leave my dogs."
Harley never escaped and had to be rescued by officers, Cronkhite said.
"They just took him down and were pulling him both ways," she said. "I was useless against those three dogs."
The vet bills for Harley may run to $1,400 or more, Cronkhite said. She said she's never run into any problems on the Poudre Trail and enjoyed walking there.
"But now I won't go out on the path until I have my husband with me," she said.
