Hey all I wanted to let you all know about this new treatment I've been using with odie. Well it's all natural. I bought some Rosemary essential oil. Because Odie has really bad flea allergies. I use a bit of essential Rosemary oil and he no longer has fleas. I might find one on him but for the most part there really isn't a problem anymore. Now it's hard to find really good Essential oils. Make sure not to use the Fragrance oil, they can be a bit harsh. As can the essential oils so if you notice the smell is really strong, you can take a bit of olive oil or almond oil and use it together. The fleas supposedly don't like the smell of rosemary. ;D

i have also heard that feeding garlic can help. Something about the oils surfacing on the skin. Although I wouldn't want to rub plain garlic oil on a dog...YUK.

If you have places in your garden that fleas live (like a rabbit burrow under your freaking shed...) you can use "diatomaceous earth". a powdery substance that kills them. Not to be used on the dogs though

Also, a bit of vinegar in the drinking water, orange and eucalyptus essential oils are supposed to be good too.

Neem oil is very effective mixed into shampoo to kill fleas, or used as a spray to kill fleas in areas dogs spend time. Not to be sprayed directly on the dogs.

I'm very interested in these holistic/natural flea remedies, but am not clear on if these are preventative or curative.
Also, I was under the impression that (most) essential oils should not be used directly on the skin, but needed a carrier oil. This was the rule of thumb when I worked in Spas...but perhaps it's different for dogs?

Essential oils shouldn't be used dierctly on the skin - some forumulas are 'good to go', but others need a carrier oil as you've said Courtney.
I have only used neem as a treatment, but I would think all of these natural remedies could be used as treatment and preventative. The garlic and garlic supplements can be used to prevent and treat.

Yeah that's why I tested the rosemary first or I would've used olive oil with it. But the one I got was really mild and didn't bother either of us. It's the easiest carrier oil to have. And since it's in the cooking isle easily accessible. But it works great! Before he was getting bald spots and now his coat is much better and doesn't itch like he did before. Now it's random whereas before it was more hurtful itching.

Also for the house, we've sprinkled borax soap detergent if we have more fleas than wanted. It's the safest thing to get rid of fleas on carpet and furniture. Love BORAX

Mary, have you used garlic to get rid of fleas? And in what form? Can I try just feeding fresh garlic with food?
I am asking because the fleas are back in season and even though Lucy is on Frontline and I sometimes give her a capstar, she still has fleas. Not bad, but I see them everyday on her. I have tried a bunch of natural remedies and none seem to be completely effective. I think she is a flea magnet or something.
I have tried vinegar in her water, it lessened the problem a little bit. I have tried essential oils, they didn't do much. I haven't tried Rosemary oil though.

You can use fresh garlic in the food. Most dogs will turn their noses up at it, though. I've stuck pieces of garlic in peanut butter, cheese, etc. Fresh garlic can really help rid her of the flea problem. I'd start with a few small pieces (just shave off a few thin slices), and hide them in something soft that she could swollow quickly without noticing.

You can also purchase garlic tablets and mix these into your pibbles food. We do this during the summer as Louisiana fleas are horrible..

Yah, fleas are horrible here. Living in NH and MA, I never had to even use a topical and rarely gave a flea bath, and my dogs spent a lot of time outside and in the woods.
I'm pretty sure Lucy will eat garlic. She will eat anything but a capstar, I have to put that in peanut butter for her to eat it, or shove it in her mouth without her expecting. She probably eats garlic off the floor while I'm cooking anyhow. So, try maybe half a clove cut up to start?

Half a clove might even be too much, but worst that can happen is she spits it out
