Bail for Saverino Cruz, 32, was set at $25,000 on charges of animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. The pit bull, owned by Cruz's brother, bit 8-year-old Nick Cruz Sunday afternoon at the family's home at 346 Farmington Ave., police said. The brother, Enrique Cruz, took the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.
Saverino Cruz was not at home when his son was bitten. But after another family member notified him, he came to the home and attacked the dog, then went to the hospital, police said.
When Enrique Cruz learned what his brother had done to the dog, he called police about 4:30 p.m., police said.
The pit bull, named Baby, was one of two that Enrique Cruz kept in a basement cage. Police Capt. Peter Costanzo said Cruz was caring for his nephew Sunday afternoon when Baby got out of his cage and bit the boy.
When police arrived, Baby was taken to a veterinarian and later was euthanized.
Enrique Cruz, 27, was charged with cruelty to animals, possession of an unvaccinated animal and possession of an unlicensed animal. He was released on $10,000 bail Sunday night and must appear in court Jan. 22.
Saverino Cruz was arraigned Monday in Superior Court in Bristol with bail initially set at $50,000. It was then lowered to $25,000, but he remained in custody Monday night.
