YALAHA, Fla. -- Three men were arrested Monday on animal cruelty charges after 26 pit bulls suspected of being used for fighting were found in two separate Lake County homes, authorities said.
Brothers Nathaniel and Bruce Warren were arrested on 17 counts of cruelty to animals and transported to the Lake County Detention Center. Herbert Gene Ellis was arrested on nine counts of animal cruelty and was also being taken to the Lake County Detention Center.
According to Lake County sheriff's deputies, Nathaniel Warren fled on foot after deputies attempted to serve a warrant on suspicion of violating his probation at 8832 E. High St. in Yalaha.
During a search, deputies said they discovered 17 pit bull dogs behind the residence that were either on heavy chains or in cages. Some of the dogs had weights attached to the chains that were containing them and the dogs did not have adequate food or water, deputies said.
An investigation led deputies to Bruce Warren, who was determined to be the dogs' caregiver.
Deputies said they confiscated numerous items from the home that are commonly used to train dogs for fighting, including heavy chains, weights used for strength conditioning, syringes, vials and literature on dogfighting.
There were also four firearms, three of which were stolen, recovered during the search, deputies said.
Ellis was arrested at 26605 Yalaha Road, which is located less than a quarter-mile from the Warren residence. Deputies said nine pit bulls were located and turned over to animal control. Some of the dogs also had heavy chains and appeared to have been possibly being trained for fighting purposes.
