I have a question I've been dying to ask people who actually know about the breed!
I had a friend who is also a pitbull owner tell me that pitbulls heads "split". I have done a lot of research on this breed, have worked in vet clinics and volunteer at a shelter. I grew up at dog shows and my mom was a professional dog trainer and never in my life have I heard such a thing. I googled it and found only a couple of things on it saying it's a wives tale that pitbulls heads split, but I would love some more opinions about this, I like to have all my facts before I tell someone (my friend) they are wrong. Thanks!

probably stems from the myth that their brains swell and they go crazy. this will not happen! unless they fall or something, but i have never heard of such a thing.

That's a new one on me LOL! It's a complete myth, of course.

That's silly - a big yawn is about as close as you are going to get with something like that..

There are other well-known (and inccurate) myths with other breeds...such as GSDs have double skulls so that bullets will bounce off their heads if shot (re: police k9s) and Doberman's brains swell which cause them to "turn on their owners". All easily spread myths among those who believe them.

I have heard this term. My understanding is "head splitting" is when our breeds heads go from looking like a thick Labrador to their characteristic box shaped head with the "divot" between their eye brows giving them that dent.

I think that's what my friend was referring to when she asked if my dogs head had "split" yet. Thanks for all the helpful input, I was pretty sure this head spliting buisness wasnt accurate, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I've heard of the mature head being called a "split head" too. It's sad how one innocent term like this can turn into such a myth and feed fear huh?

It makes sense when described as a maturation process, but it is not a technical nor correct term at all. And I think the term can be misleading as obviously some of us thought immediately, "Must be a take on that old head-exploding myth".
Personally, I think it sounds ridiculous - it reminds me of something American Bully-type people would come up with.

"Has your dogs head split" didnt scare me, I didnt think of it as a bad thing, I knew what the person meant, I just didnt think is was actually an accurate term or description used for describing a dogs head growing is all. Silly how some people just make stuff up and pass it along, huh!? I really just wanted 2 know if I was correct in thinking it was a myth. Thanks so much I absolutly love reading all the replies!!!

I hear ya, Chloe's mom And you'd be amazed (or maybe not!) how much stuff just gets made up about Pit Bulls. Like the bite pressure thing. Someone I know traced the roots and it was discovered some reporter years ago just made it up and put it in an article. And it got quoted ever since.

Actually it is run by ignorance and misrepresentation of facts

Actually it is run by ignorance and misrepresentation of facts Ya that too. But i think once a journalist puts pit bull in their title they can say whatever they want in the rest of the article because the title has already sold the paper. Because people are ignorant they fear pit bulls. And once a journalist constructs a selling head line they can misrepresent the facts any way they wish. which in this case aren't even facts at all. sometimes i just want to...

Yes true...... the media will twist , lie and dont give a damn just to sell their wares, its all about money and ratings....the guy who created that cartoon of the cops shooting the chimp, knew that it would cause a ruckus with the black community etc and others, this is an example of media exploitation...
