A five year-old boy walking home from school was mauled by a large pit bull in the 23-hundred block of Imogene Street in Memphis' airport area Thursday afternoon. The child is now is stable condition.
The dog's caretakers are very sorry a child was injured. They say "Beast" was playful, good around people -- timid even. That's certainly not what witnesses will tell you.
"I heard the screaming and I knew it was the dog... Biting him and pulling him and tossing him... It was shocking, terrifying, very frightening," says Linda Wicks. "I just came out and when I saw what was going on, I grabbed my broom and just ran out and just went to beating the dog."
Police credit her for saving the boy's life, calling her a hero. Neighbors say the 5 year-old and two other children were walking home from school. They say the dog had been roaming the street all day and was on a rampage. They say it lunged at the mailman earlier in the day and when police came, it tried to attack neighbors.
Vicki Murdock lives up the street. When she came to investigate what was happening, the dog lunged at her as well. Murdock says, "The dog came at another neighbor and I and the police fanned him off of us. And so he ran into the back yard and he just came at them, with the blood in his mouth from the child that he had mauled earlier."
Police shot and killed the dog. It's caretakers say the dog was never a problem before and they think the dog was provoked, then set free.
"The kids come in here and mess with him," says Tempestt Bolin, "They throw balls and stuff at him. My mom had to run the kids off last Saturday morning on both sides of the house messing with the dogs."
Witnesses say the kids escaped by hopping into truck that drove by. Animal Services are testing the dog for disease. There are no charges yet as police are still investigating exactly how the dog got out. Two other dogs at the home were found still locked behind the gate.
