Totally cool, and great exercise for the breed. Springpoles NEED to be handled properly, though, as a badly constructed one could seriously injure a dog.
A problem, however, is that your neighbors could consider such things dog fighting paraphernalia or believe you are training your dog for fighting. So keeping a low profile is a good idea.

I plan on ordering a springpole from the working pitbull website! My dog Boomer loves playing tug o war and all he has is a rope hanging from a tree outside! Also, I recommend everyone to take a look at the workingpitbull website listed above, its great!

i use both spring pole and flirt pole for lucifer....no harm it it and he LOVES them. i made my own....exact to the ones i seen sold on thebullyhouse.com and my dad works at a metal shop that he had the mount (which they also sell at bullyhouse for $150) made for me. total price to make the spring and mount was ALOT cheaper then whats sold online. i talked to my dad about producing more of these mounts for me while i produce the spring portion....might have my own springpole business...lol. one thing to keep in mind some pitbulls prefer to keep theyre back paws on the ground so you might not want to set it to high off the ground and provide some padding on the wall or pole you mount it to. i use a mattress thats mounted to a telephone pole we had installed in my backyard....or i mean lucifers backyard....lol.

its easy......you can get the spings at home depot...youll need o-rings and a carabeaner if you go on bullyhouse.com and click on products for sale youll find a pretty good piture of theres. then cruise around home depot till you find the parts. i also have one in my house to that i constructed the same was but mounted it to a steel tension bar across the hallway that is set on the molding of the door frame and bolted to the beams.

far enough that your dog dosent get ahold of the spring causing damage to teeth or cut mouth. its gonna be trial and error until you find a good hieght and length. i hang mine well above his jumping ability now...ever so often i have to adjust as he jumps higher and higher. good luck and anymore assistance just ask.

Tip:....Tug of war is great excercise but I dont recommend it.... it gets the pitbull too excited and word of advice never let him win....I am in the midst of building a springpole, mounted with a t bar post that you can buy at homedepot.... it the rope must be the right height off theground or it can become dangerous to the dog and his back getting hurt etc

When i finish playing tugowar with boomer I take the rope from him then I have him sit and stay and give it to him so that he knows im in control! I have all the supplies bought to make a spring pole but i just havent started making one! Also, Im afraid if people see a springpole in my yard they will think i fight my dogs but o well i guess!

Tug-o-war is a great way to teach the dog to have a good 'off' switch. Under the right circumstances, T-o-W is perfectly fine. It's a bit of a misconception that it causes aggression. A dog with no problems won't be made into a 'bad' dog by the owner playing tug with him. The idea is to teach the dog an 'out' cue, and frequently interrupt the tug (I have my dog Out and Sit), and to also have the dog tug ONLY when given a cue ("tug", "get it", etc). Good exercise in self control ;D

I play tug o war with my dog all the time (or rather, now my hubby does b/c i'm 38 weeks pregnant) and he'll let go and let her run around and shake it, and my dog doesn't think she's "dominant" of him and she doesn't attack us or anything at all. When we put the toy down or ignore her its over and that's it. She might carry the rope over and put it on my knee a few times if she wants to play =). People say a lot of stuff about these dogs... And a lot of it seems to be bs. Imagine my little 48 lb lil bit thinking she's dominant over my 6 ft 220 lb husband, who has a human brain and opposable thumbs.. or even me, or the kids... I say keep on having fun!!! And teach your dog some sort of "okay we're done" command so they'll learn to get over it when you stop without giving you "the face".

I use a flirtpole. It's a great exercise, and my dogs love it. I sometimes do a springpole, but keep in mind a safer and better exercise is if the dog keeps all four paws on the ground.

Agreed ^ I think flirt poles are fun for the humans involved in the game, too.
