ROSEVILLE - A Springfield woman was killed Sunday when she was apparently mauled to death by her pet pit bulls.
Springfield Police are not releasing the woman's name. Investigators are also talking to a man who lived with the victim.
Two adult pit bulls and one puppy were discovered inside the residence.
The dogs are being held at an animal control facility.
Officials with the Springfield Police do not know if the dogs bit the woman before or after she died.
Chris Surratt of Roseville, said he has seen a number of these stories and does not believe the pit bulls are to blame.
Surratt, 25, has been raising and selling pit bulls for more than three years. He believes the people who own or trained the dogs are to blame for any violent behavior.
"I have had four or five litters of pit bulls. I've sold around 25 to 30 pit bulls and I have never had any complaints of aggressive behavior from my dogs," Surratt said. "I've never been bitten by a pit bull."
Surratt said there are a number of breeds of pit bulls such as red nose, blue nose, brindle, or gator pit. Surratt said he has never seen any breed of pit bull that was naturally violent.
"Pit bulls that are mean or aggressive are that way because they have been trained or taught to be mean," Surratt explained. "You can teach any dog to be mean. Some of the meanest dogs I've seen were little terriers, lap dogs. I've been bitten by a terrier, but like I said I've never been bitten by a pit bull."
Depending on the breed and the paperwork that registers the dogs, pit bull pups sell for $150 to $500 each, according to Surratt, who has a red nose and a gator pit breeding pair of dogs.
"My dogs have never been aggressive," he added. "They do all kinds of tricks, they sit, they roll over. They have been around kids. They have never been mean to anyone."
Surratt said cases like the Michael Vick case where dog fighting was held in one of Vick's homes does not help the reputation of pit bulls.
"They had pit bulls that were trained to be mean," Surratt said. "Those dogs had to be mean just to eat, just to be allowed to do anything."
Surratt believes pit bulls do not get a fair shake. He said there are other breeds of dogs that are larger than pit bulls, just as dangerous, if not more deadly than pit bulls, if they are trained to be aggressive.
"German shepherds, police dogs, they can be vicious," he said. "Rottweilers, I will not have anything to do with a rottweiler if it has been trained to be aggressive. It all goes back to the fact that you can train anything to be mean."
Surratt said there are some people who also cross certain breeds of pit bulls to make them larger and then train them to be aggressive.
When an incident involving a pit bull attack takes place Surratt said the owners should be held accountable because the dog has no say in how it is treated or trained.
