Since it's finally getting nice out (well, at least here in the Northeast), it's time to get the dogs out and about. What are some outdoor activities that you enjoy with your dog? One of Luca's favorite things to do is visit his 'grandma's' (Scott's mom's) house and run around in the grassy, fenced in yard (a luxury for an apartment dog). He's been kind of cooped up since his surgery last October, so we are looking forward to getting out and getting some exercise.....

Our favorites in Spring (before it gets over 85 degrees) is hitting the beach with the dogs. There is a very secluded area of an island which has been shifting since hurricane Katrina which basically has created an entirely new island attached to Dauphin Island. Way out on that island, I let Jazz off leash and she runs and chases seagulls and splashes through tidal pools. She's my realiable off-leasher, Cajun has to have his fun on a long line. This year I want to take one or both of them camping with us to a local river. There's a few people down here with a Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and Newfies who compete in carting and do conditioning by backpacking the dogs on long hikes and that's something we've never been able to follow up on but I'm going to shoot an email and get out there with them. Usually I just take the dogs along to the park with the kids, to the beaches and over to my friend's to romp with her dogs and the boarders, which always makes for a tired dog.

i'm glad Luca will be able to get back to his fun activity soon!!
I always feel so bad cuz mine stay crated while we're at work, so about a week ago I got off my lazy butt and started walking my dogs EVERY day, no exceptions, along with fetch/playtime in the backyard. It's good exercise for me, them, and it'll help keep their nails filed down by walking/running on the concrete. Plus it gets them out, gets their body moving, brain going, etc. It'll be good for us all.
They seem to be loving it so far. Only issues are where I live, there are TONS of stray dogs so we're being hassled the whole time we walk...I probably need to get AC on a few of the strays because it is causing problems during some of our walks (some of them aren't friendly)....
sooooo anyway, we're now walking every day (even tho most days I don't get home until 7 - ugh) and the dogs are loving it!

Usually to Chickasabogue park which has some great trails, some easy, some more challenging. A group of friends and I used to mountain bike there. It's in S. Alabama. There are some other places around here but very few, nothing like what I see the rest of the country has to offer.

Melinda, I need to do the same, make sure I get Luca out for a decent 30+ min walk (he takes several short walks) each day. I'm a bad mommy! It's rough when you work all day and then don't get home til later. I can sympathize with you! And I don't have stray dogs in my area, but I have TONS of dogs period, a nice park that I often have to avoid because of an 'unofficial' dog park and two dogs on opposite ends of my block that I have to try and avoid because they are not in the most safely contained yards Oh, then there's the Aussie and GSD that randomly run loose on my block, and the trio of Basset Hounds that get let out on their unfenced lawn, loose. I'm not in the best area to have a dog-aggressive AmStaff. :-[

Hmmm I am glad you started this thread cause I wanted to get some ideas. I have a dog who does not fetch with out food. so I am always looking for new outdoor activities. We started playing Frisbee with a hyperflyte jawz Frisbee. since he prefers to chew it than return it I must note an excellent choice of Frisbee as this is one item he has not destroyed. I occasionally take dremmel to it to file sharp edges. My problem is 2nd season of frisbee he has learned to catch it well but I just cant get em motivated to play unless i have chicken or something.
His absolute favorite game must be hide and seek. again involves food reward. Go find the toys again involves food reward. Weave through my legs Food reward Skateboarding. food Reward Walks loves to go for walks use to be a pet store on the walking path so that included a free treat. But they closed down so HEY no more food reward. He still checks the door to see if anyone there every walk. oh almost forgot he does daily zoomie laps around the yard each day. No swimming here terrified of getting wet. And me I enjoy gardening. I am going to teach Rocky to help. Really!

Anything outdoors for us! Love the mnt's and we got Chloe a "back pack" for this summer, so she can help a little!
I wish we had a beach around here, but not so lucky!

My two are still enjoying the summertime walks, and we've only skipped a day or two when there just wasn't time. Side note - Do you think hot pavement hurts them, or are the pads tough enough that it doesn't bother them?

Well here its been to damb hot or my dog. And I too wonder if the deck and the pavement is too hot for the pads. Cause the deck burned my feet this weekend.

Lola loves nothing more than to chase her ball. She just turned a year old and last year as a puppy in summertime she was scared stiff of water. We took her to rivers and lakes and she would get in but only for treats and only after we forced her in a few times. This year at the river Ergo did the exact same thing (he's now maybe 5 or 6 months old). So this is his first spring/summer. But Lola? She dove right in- I guess shes not afraid of water anymore. So I CAN NOT wait to go to the lake once its warm enough and bring her ball so she can go get it in the water! I freakin love the water so I'm happy she likes it to now! And Bama; Lola is our reliable off-leash dog too. We definately talked about and are getting an extra long lead so Ergo can roam and play to but he won't be able to run off. Lola was backyard bred by a friend and has always been leary(sp?) of being away from us or people in general. Ergo was found off the streets as a little puppy with parvo. So he definately has a drive to live and explore. I don't know how he got on the streets that young anyway. Maybe wandered off? Anywho, warm weather = hiking , rivers, and lakes for us. I wish we lived near the ocean. That would be awesome!
