So we finally got our FoA certificate in the mail and this coming Tuesday Ergo is going to get neutered!!!! YAY!!! Now we won't have to worry about him and Allie around each other (Allie is still waiting to be mange free to get spayed ). I am so excited! Ha- i'm sure he wouldn't be if he knew what was coming! While he is there he is also getting chipped, any shots he still may need (i.e. rabies) and probably just a regular exam to make sure everything is ok. The shelter was kinda sketchy with the whole shot thing when we first got him. They said he had all of his but they were vary unprofessional when it came to any information on him. He did have mange and parvo so i'm wondering if blood work is more necessary for him to have? I know it's optional and am told by most that puppies really don't need it but what about one that started out so sick? Thanks guys! Fingers crossed everything goes well!

I don't ever think blood work is a bad idea. There have been a few times that we ran bloodwork as a preoperative screen and found things the dog was completely asymptomatic for. The down side is the cost, but it's not invasive or dangerous to the animal in anyway.
Neither mange nor parvo are diseases that cause long term internal organ damage once treated, so, medically, I don't think it would be indicated.

Garland is definitely the one to ask for vet advice but I personally always have preblood work done and the whole nine for any dog I alter.

Ok soooo...Ergo is at the vets...*tear*. I was sad parting with him this morning. He got bloodwork, last set of shots (kill me over these vet prices man. It didn't occur to me that he would need his last set before they did anything with him and they are wayyy cheaper when you have them done at a pet store. Had I remembered I would've had them done where we normally go and NOT the vets. $20 rabies and $35 distemper. My bank=broke) the neuter itself, pain meds, and chipped. I think that's it. Can't wait til he's back home. And my fingers are crossed that his "attitude problems" (that's what I like to call them) will subside a pretty good amount after this. I was reading the benefits of neutering a male dog and it's effects on their aggression(testosterone) levels. Ergy isn't "aggressive" persay, but, he does get into tifts with Lola (we have to always have really good supervision on them) I couldn't imagine having same sex male dogs in one house. Whenever their play starts to escalate we say "Hey now..." and maybe throw a "be nice" or "manners" in there sometimes and then they start kissing and behaving. Lol, but there've been a few times where it wasn't caught fast enough and I swear they would've torn each other apart (they drop cold if you flash the water bottle though- it's our 'in case of emergencies' with them). They're listening skills are really good though esp. when you have treats. But he gets really, really, really, mouthy with her and sometimes even Lo will get pissed off(not normally) so we make them stop. It always starts out nice then somewhere in the play he gets pissy and it's like, I swear, a brother and sister when they're playing and getting along great then BAM, one did ONE little thing to the other and they're slapping each other in the face. Except that's when Ergo starts getting more vocal and mouthy...But watching them it always starts with him just getting rougher and rougher with her until he actually seems to be getting all peeved off(over what Idk...maybe b/c she's bigger and stronger? But she ALWAYS rolls over on her back when they play in that submissive position so it's not like she's smaking him all over the place or something). Lola is VERY good with him. Plays gently, usually licking him while they play, rolls over on her back while they play. Rarely does she instigate anyhting with him, he always come up to her to start this stuff but she has shown she will not back down/off he wants to start something serious. So we monitor and EVERY night I'll start to hear his little vioce get more and more serious sounding and see his frustration start to build (Lola could be in the complete submissive position with him) and we give them a "time out" and "remind them of their manners". But he's a growing pup with growing "balls" so i'm hoping this helps him to chill out a lot. Oh yeah, and he isn't confident (or something) around every other dog yet when we take them to parks and walk them. Sometimes, not always though so he's getting beter, he'll start his little "woofs" and I have to stop and stop him from walking and avert his attention back to me and give him treats while the dog passes........so i'm hoping his neuter will also help with just being around other dogs in general. I think part of it is just becoming accustomed to being aound other animals, esp. dogs, but then Lola got over all that stuff faster than Ergo is. So my fingers are crossed!!!
