Would you leave them natural or crop them?
If there are any advantages or disadvantages that you would like to share with your opinion, please do so.

I voted for natural - I LOVE cropped ears (when done right), but I cannot justify cropping anymore. It is merely for looks, and there isn't any benefit for the dog. I can't see putting a dog through the pain, and ME through the hassle of taping, gluing, and the stress of wondering, "Will they stand right?!?"

I feel strongly about this! While the look of cropped ears CAN be cool, there is NO benefit in amputating the majority of your dog's ear, and is as good as amputating the majority of YOUR ear. No need. They look great the way they are born!

I'm fostering a pit right now and some genius cut a quarter of the way through one ear then stopped. It's pretty obvious that it was a home job with scissors or something. It makes me grind me teeth every time I see it I get so mad. Cutting into a dog for aesthetic purpose just seems crazy to me.

Definilty natural. I personally think that it is part of their personality when kept natural. Cropping them just doesn't seem right to me and windowdog is right I believe its just crazy. But its your choice.

Natural. I have rescued with cropped ears and love the look, but I couldn't have it done my self.

I voted undecided, I do like the look of some crops that are done professionally. They banned Ear cropping down here quite some time ago, so you don't see many dogs with crops around anymore, only some really old dogs or imported dogs.
Most dogs have natural ears here, and I think they look great too. They add character and expression that cant be seen on a cropped dog.
There are some back yard butchers who still crop though, as vets wont do it unless for medical reasons, and its sickening what they must put the dogs through.

If you know anyone who lost a limb in Iraq, then you know of the "ghost" pain that the amputee gets in the lost limb, which is excrutiating. I wonder how the puppies feel after their ears are amputated.

I wonder how the puppies feel after their ears are amputated. Just anecdotally, I've found they do experience ghost pains. My APBT was cropped at 4+ mos of age (TOO LATE!!!) and he seemed to experience significant ghost pains. My AST was cropped earlier and his seem to be less intense. Totally non-scientific report, though ;D

it just freaks me out. when i got my first cat my daughter was a baby and the vet swore up and down that he had to be declawed, and I seriously feel like crap behind this. while many cropped dogs look beautiful, i can't do it and i think my dog looks great, and besides her ears are like little snips of velvet and i like to mess with them too much!

Natural. Some dogs look beautiful with cropped ears but I really don't see the point in doing it. My pup ears are trying to stand erect but one seems to bed just below the tip... I think (as someone stated earlier) natural dog just have so much more charecteristics than a cropped dog! I'm not saying that the cropped dogs are any less lovable, I just always go for the naturals.
And I've never thought of the ghost pains. Omg. How horrible :-( I now know I would never get a future pup cropped.
Is there any reason for cropping other than just for looks?

Wow, its kind of sad that we humans cut into perfect dogs just to alter their looks. Reminds me of how people with low self esteem sometimes undergo surgery just to look better or fit in better. Except these pits don't have an issue with themselves. We have the issues.
I can understand why some places have banned this practice

I think that for conformation showing, natural ears would be MORE desireable, as they cannot hide the flaws (like ears that stand straight up instead of halfway, etc...) the same way cropped ears can. That would allow breeders to make better decisions when selecting breeding pairs. I think my dog has such perfect little ears, they stand up about an inch or so and then neatly flop over... but of course she's MY dog so I always think she's exceptionally beautiful over any other dog =)
