I have a friend (Connor) who has a 3 year old APBT named Harley. Boomer and Harley used to be BEST friends. Long Story short- Boomer got into a fight with a pushy male and now hates all males- including Harley. I have Harley at my house for the next 3 days because Connor has to go on a 3 day business trip and I agreed to doggy sit. I have Harleys crate in my spare bedroom and Boomers crate is in my bedroom. They have not had ANY interaction, NOTHING. But when I let Boomer loose he stands in front of the spare bedrooms door sniffing through the cracks. If I let him stand their long enough he begins scratching, whining and growling (At most in a lunging sort of way). When he started this behavior, I decided that I would keep a leash on him when I take him out of my bedroom, this keeps him from the door. But now he has started MARKING!!! HE IS NEUTERED!!! He has now peed on my door, on my bed, on the couch and on a cabinet! He never even used to lift his leg when he peed, now he’s marking!!! I also tried crating him; he threw a fit for probably an hour or so (He usually NEVER makes a peep in his crate). I let him out after he calmed down (He was in there for about 2 hours), and he ran straight to my closed door, lifted his leg and peed. This concerns me because Boomer NEVER used to act this way, he would get into scuffles if there was excitement but otherwise he be somewhat tolerant of other males. Honestly, it makes me so sad! These two grew up together!!! I was wondering if anyone knows of anything I can do to make Boomer STOP this behavior! ??? I know the DA is something we have to live with, but the marking? It would be nice if I could start working with him now before Orie (An APBT that I am HOPEFULLY going to foster for Sonya) is here so I’m not dealing with this then as well! I have a 10 month old so I can’t really have a dog peeing everywhere… It’s just gross! BTW- Harley is neutered as well. Any ideas appreciated!

Wow IDK. ROcky will not quietly stay in his crate if another dog is here so I know it would be difficult if I were to foster. Hope he gets better and use to having the visitor.

It’s SO stressful!!! So far, there’s been little change. He isn’t marking as much today but last night when I was trying to sleep, Boomer kept pacing around the room whining. He has marked 4 times today. (I think he’s beginning to run empty, it’s just smaller squirts now.) He just seems really edgy and tense (I dropped a plastic cup on the floor and he FREAKED!). Hopefully he will just let it go!

Ugh, I wish I had some advice to offer for the marking. All I can suggest is maybe do some calming exercises with him. Maybe even gentle massage just to help him get over the stress? Do you know TTouch?

I need to learn TTouch too. When we went for therapy test when we first walked in Rocky was so stressed. Luckily I trained him to "Relax" on his spot. Then I just pet him and say nice relax in a very calm voice. I never thought to learn TTouch.
If you have not worked relax with him it is very helpful. Rocky will do it with other dogs around. This can be very difficult for a dog to do. So after the visitor leaves I would work it. Use something to be his spot. Like a mat or a blanket or whatever you can bring near you on the floor by the couch for example. I started by getting rocky to lay down on his side then put head down. He now will get into the side position when I say relax. Then I say head down and he will put his head down. People get a kick out of it especially because he will do it with just hand signals. Very quietly I say nice relax and stroke him till he falls asleep. This is usually the what we require from him before getting a good treat like bully sticks. "relax", "put your head down". Maybe boomer can learn he can relax and nothing is going to happen. I hope this helps. I have said before and will say again "Relax" is my favorite trick I taught Rocky.

BELLY BAND. put it on boomer.. even though rufus is neutered he will mark if another male comes around whether intact or neutered too... you have another male in your /boomers house so he is marking the house so that the other dog knows its boomers...

I don’t know TTouch...as a matter of fact, I’ve never even heard of it. Can someone please tell me what this is?
Where can I get a belly band? He marked once this morning. UGH!
Should I be disciplining him for the whining and growling or just work on teaching him to relax?
Last night he was lying with me in bed and I was massaging his back and his back legs (I do this often) and for the first time since Harley was here, I felt his body relax. At night he seems a little more content, during the day he is SO alert.
When I have Harley loose and Boomer is in his crate Boomer throws a fit. He can hear Harley and he goes crazy. It’s not even a barking or growling, I don’t even know what you’d call it-It’s almost a screeching. I’ve never heard a dog make those noises before. Am I doing something wrong here? I feel like I should sneak around with Harley (LOL, That sounds funny) so Boomer doesn’t hear! I’ve tried leaving Boomer loose in my bedroom (With the door closed) while I have Harley out but Boomer scratches the door so bad I’m afraid he will ruin it!

I agree, belly band. This may be an ongoing issue with two males in the house. Something to think about should things come through with Orie. I haven't heard from Sonya on that one yet.

I think pet smart or any pet store should have belly band. I would not him for whining but reward for being quiet when relaxing. Rocky is a major whiner and the more he is scolded the worse it can get. My husband is very quilty of not being able to ignore the whine. But I have found rewarding for quiet to work best.

Oh yeah and I think t touch is just a way that someone came up with a certain way to message in some kind of circular motion. I would like to learn more about it as that is all I know.

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. I did gentle massage with Dharma A LOT when she first came home. I was amazed at how quickly she just let all the tension go... she went from being super alert and agitated about the other dogs to snoring asleep in less than 10 minutes. TTouch is just gentle massage using small circular motions. Here's the website: www.ttouch.com/index.shtml

Thanks Suzi!!!
I tried massaging Boomer today but he wouldn’t hold still. Harley is going to be here until the 7th now (Change of plans). Hopefully things will be better by then. I’m going to go to Petco tomorrow and see if I can find a Belly Band (I never have heard of such a thing!). I hope that will put an end to the marking-Fingers crossed!
Thanks for all the info and help!

www.pekeatzurescue.com/bellybands.htmThis is where I order my Belly bands from. I like the fabric choices and the quality is good. You can also make your own. I'm sure there is a pattern online somewhere. But, I'd sew my finger to something, so I just buy. Heh. My boy dog Capone hates the smell of new. He typically doesn't mark, unless there is something new (new couch, new sheets, new shoes, etc). So, he has to wear it after I go buy things. I like that the proceeds go to a dog rescue.

Basically it is a diaper and I have heard of people making their own out of disposable diapers maybe you can try that since you should have diapers around the house.

Now I remember someone on some forum maybe here said they use little swimmers and cut them into a band or a tail hole. found this doggiediapers.blogspot.com/ I guess the swimmers are good cause they have elastic waist.

Awesome link Loverocksalot!!! Thanks! He hasn’t marked today so I definitely think Sonya was right...He got it out of his system and now he’s done. I actually have some Little Swimmers from the summer but they would be too small for Boomer. I’m still going to buy a Belly Band though (It may come in handy down the road). Boomer is still a little more alert than he usually is but things are slowly getting better!

Make sure you get the band and not the panties. Boy dog parts stick out the front of panties and diapers and they can still pee. It should be just a band that wraps around the belly and be labeled for male dogs.
