APBTs are known for tearing their ACLs. Expensive surgery is usually what the vet pushes on the owner, but owners need to be aware that surgery isn't the only option. I myself had a dog that tore BOTH ACLs - we opted for surgery on one side, but not the other. The side that we did not have surgery on was the side that healed almost completely and showed almost no sign of injury. The operated-on side? Not so much.
Here is an interesting forward I received:

I have permission to forward this from another member of a Conservative Management Group that belong to, so I am sending it to everyone who either has a dog or who will forward on to people with dogs.
Many of you know that my Rudi successfully recovered from his ACL tear withOUT surgery by using conservative management, supplements, and a brace.
Read about something else available to help speed recovery.

Hi Everyone,
I was just watching ABC's Nightline and caught this story about Stem Cell therapy for dogs. AMAZING. If someone had only told me this was available and this real I would have jumped at the chance.
abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=4109559&page=1 If you remember I was asking a few weeks ago but didn't have anything real to go on. Now we do.
They take the stem cells from the fat of the dog and send it to a lab here in San Diego. Two days later the cells are returned to the vet and they are injected back into the dog at the site of the degeneration whether it be a torn ligament or even hip Dysplasia. They have been doing it on horses for some time and then someone asked about dogs too!!!
I have to state I am a little angry right now that no one at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital told me this was an option! Especially since one of their own doctors is listed at the Vet Stem
www.vet-stem.com/locatevet/ Web site. You can bet they will be hearing from me. I know the surgeon saw how upset I was when he was telling me that surgery was the best option in our case.
This is the doctor at the hospital where we go that is doing this. Dr.
Joshua Jackson Veterinary Specialty Hospital 10435 Sorrento Valley Road San Diego, CA 92121 858-875-7500
I am emailing our Dr. right after this. I will let you know what kind of
reply I get.
I watched with my own eyes in this report on TV that in a period of two to four weeks the dogs they were showing developed SIGNIFICANT improvement with out the trauma of surgery and all of this restrictions that we have been going thru.
Maybe there is another bad side to this story but right now I can't imagine what it might be?
I hope this is real and can help others out there.
Denise
