Well we moved into Springfield this week, and our neighbor immediatly told me that she was deathly afraid of my pit bull, that they turn, all the media stuff! I was almost in tears but I responded as politely as I could that our dog was very nice but I respected her feelings.
The neighbor later came to say she hoped she hadn't offended me, and she asked me a little about the breed (seeing I have a five year old and am nine months pregnant)! I told her the history. She has a beautiful husky and she admitted that people judge her dog as well.
Well, I rescued a HUGE husky a few days later, when I found him wandering the road, and brought him to my house while I tried to locate the owner. After a while it was obvious he was just lost, he was super well behaved, and he and my dog spent some time sniffing through the fence. I took Stella out, and the neighbor watched while they greeted eachother very politely! The neighbor wanted to have a closer look at Stella after that, and eventually, came to pet her and throw a stick for her! I think that Stella's calm attitude-and MINE-helped our neighbor feel more comfortable around pit bulls.
I am totally comforted by this. I think that when confronted by people who dislike our dogs, the best thing to do is be polite and respectful, and then let our dog's best qualities shine! I like to think that now our neighbor is more comfortably able to meet dogs as individuals, so she is happier, and our dog is more welcome here!
Just a little something that i felt like recording...
And by the way, we located the husky's owner up the street a few hours later! I thank god i did not take everyone's advice and just call some shelter.... His name was Rocky =) and he is safely at home!!
