Please do not get a Banfield chip as they are not read at most shelters. HomeAgain and Avid are usually found when scanning a dog. Shelter workers know to scan just about the whole dog due to migration.
The chip has helped us find owners that were missing their pets. Its been a blessing over and over again.
Also, it shows ownership in case someone takes your dog and you can prove it is your pup....we had this instance too

I've actually (while teching) done insertions, and it's relatively pain-free to the dog~just a quick poke. compared to the # of chips inserted & the # of tumors reported, supposedly related, the ratio of tumor-related cases is SO low, i honesly wouldn't even worry about that. true, some do migrate and yes, some don't scan on all readers, but doing a lil research on the most updated/used manufactures should help to ease some of your uncertainty, while answering some of your questions. I have one done and 3 not done.
