I have been thinking about microchipping but know little about it.
We are thinking about having Marley and my cat microchipped but we don’t know if its even really worth it?! If my cat would ever get out the door I do not think anything/anyone would get near her and with Marley our local ‘animal control’ is the Vet Center which knows me really well and I would know exactly where to look for him!
I also wondered if there are any health issues that go along with microchipping?
Microchipping is very pricey (In my area anyway-About $60-$70) and I just wonder what you guys think about it.

See if you can find a clinic or event to get them chipped. Some shelters even do it. At the Mutt Show last year, they offered it for only $20. I think it's more important for a dog than a cat, because most people do not take in stray cats. But for Marley, I definitely would.

I am a proponent of chipping....Harley is!
There are quite a few low chip places you can go to know depending on where you live. I would do a google search for a low chip clinic in your area or call your local shelter and see if the offer it or if they can suggest a facility that does.

I agree with the others. The research on the health/migration risks is inconclusive. IMO, not having a pet microchipped is a much bigger risk to take.

Alright, I am going to call around and try to find a clinic that is cheaper. Even if I have to pay the full price I am going to go ahead and do it anyways. There have been quite a few suspicious missing dogs in the past 12 months and Id rather be safe than sorry, I don’t let Marley out of my sight but you just never know.
For those of you whose dogs are chipped: Did they act sore afterwards?
And this is probably a really dumb question but does the dog have to be put under anesthetics when they put the chip in?

Amy Jo it literally takes a second. My vet did it in the office and Harley did not even feel it!

It's like an ear piercing gun with a grain of rice in it. No worse on them than their vaccinations!

When my last dog was chipped the vet shaved off a small patch of fur between her shoulder blades, gave her some local numbing stuff and injected the chip. I don't think she really noticed anything other than the vet touching her. It happens in less than two minutes and no knocking them out required!

To be honest, I had to pay about $120 to get my last dog Bunny chipped but then again I live in NYC where things love to be stupidly priced.

Given how many shelters put down pits without even giving them a chance to be adopted I think it's irresponsible to not chip a pit.

There are different chip companies, too. Luca's is HomeAgain, and they are the company I'd use again in the future. Their chips are now supposed to be migration-proof.

Harley's chip is through: www.akccar.org/It is a one time fee. At the time I got Harley chipped it was like 12 bucks now it is up to $17.50 for lifetime enrollment.

I need that for Cappy. A GPS on that dog would help us for sure!

The GPS thing sounds great. Im going to find out where the closest vet center is that has the chip with the GPS.
