Barley caught, killed, and ate a mouse outside today. All in a matter of 30 seconds while I watched in horror. I tried to get to him before he swallowed the poor wriggling thing, but he chomped and swallowed it before I could stop him. I'm worried about worms and other parasites. Should I take him to the vet just in case? ???

you can just deworm him for the worms/parasites. i would be more concerned if the mouse ate mouse poison .

Luckily we don't keep any around, and I talked to both my neighbors earlier and they don't either. Not that this means we're safe. Mice obviously can travel far. I'm keeping a very close eye on him. It's times like these that I'm glad he's so big. Even a small amount of anything toxic would probably kill a little dog, but at least he has a better chance at 75lbs. It's been about 6 hours and he seems normal so far.

I really don't think mice are dangerous to eat.

I think if we knew all that our dogs ate, we'd have a heart attack!

Well, my cat eats creatures everyday and she's fine. I think your dog is going to be alright.

How is Barley doing? I am sure he is fine! Obviously his mom is more traumatized than he is...just breath...LOL I felt the same way when Harley batted a chipmunk off the fence rails, pounced on it, picked it up and gave it a good death shake...fortunately my husband was able to intervene before she consumed the little fella. Also, like ME said hydrogen peroxide works wonders for making them throw up quickly anything they ate that they shouldn't have and lord knows these dogs eat a lot of crap that leaves us scratching our heads!

there is nothing wrong with them eating the critters. you just have to make sure the neighbors didnt put poison out to kill the critters- that is the problem part, if the critter eats the poison and wanders into your yard and your dogs eat the critter then the dog can have serious medical issues or die from eating a poisoned critter

Barley is fine, LOL! Honestly, this is about the least freakout worthy thing that Barley has ever eaten. His daddy wanted to call the vet right away, and I told him he was crazy. It's a mouse. I was just worried about anything toxic the mouse might have eaten, and then the worms of course. But I figured he would be just fine. I just asked about the worms because I don't have any experience with deworming, so I don't know if there is anything preventative that the vet could do. I'm checking Barley's poop, but I do that for all of them all the time, LOL! These dogs change our lives in so many strange and disgusting ways! ;D
