Heartwarming and redemptive -the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

I think Oogy is an adorable name! I know i would be yelling out everyday when I got home "Where's my Oogy Boogy?!" lol
Good for them for wanting a dog some many others would have passed by.

I am going to buy this book for my students in Learning Support. As I have read and learned about this breed from all you wonderful owners, and this awesome forum, I felt so often that they mirror what so many of my kids have gone through. They are the kids with a mental health diagnosis or from homes with chaos, addiction and abuse. Is it no wonder learning can be difficult? They are also the kids with "bad raps" who are often not welcomed in some classes. All summer I kept thinking that there has to be a way I can use the stories of dogs from this misunderstood breed in a therapeutic way for my kids. I have a feeling many will feel a common bond. This book will be a good start, along with stories many of you have posted. I want to thank all of you who are heroes to these dogs. Also, please pray for all of the lost kids out there who are heading back to school waiting for people to tell them they are loved and valued.

hey teacher, you should try to get a reading program in your school for your students with the dogs.. wouldnt it be nice if a pit bull came to school to have the students read to him/her ? most therapy groups have the reading program you should check it out, i think your students would love to be visited by a breed that is misunderstood as the kids are...

Teacher, that is awesome!!! And I think ME's idea is great. Animals are therapeutic for children in so many ways: emotionally, physically, developmentally.

Wish teacher lived near me I am looking for this type of therapy work. Rocky has been therapy dog for several months yet having a hard time finding volunteer work just right for us. He would be perfect for HS setting. I believe the special Ed head at my sons school had her lab therapy certified but I may ask anyway. Good Luck Teacher.

carolann try the elementary schools near you, or contact the therapy group they probably have a list of schools that want the reading program there. teacher, you can contact Delta society, therapy dogs international, therapy dogs incorporated and bright and beautiful therapy dogs and ask for a therapy dog to come to your school.. most of the therapy groups do have pitbulls that are certified.

But one thing TDI does not register as pit bulls I was told it is "mixed breed or American staffordshire, take it or leave it." only AKC Breed so ask for amstaff too not just pit bulls

carolann you have to call the schools and get the program started... most schools dont know where to begin, so if you call around and ask if they want the ROCK reading program and explain what it is they might say yes www.therapyanimals.org/R.E.A.D.html
