I heard that rawhide bones might have bad stuff in them. Bones are my dog's favorite toy. I buy her a bone from petsmart, the foot and a half long one, once a week for ten bucks. Sometimes I get bones from the butcher and boil them, and she'll lick the marrow out, but she loves to chew the rawhide bones. Anyone know of a better replacement? She NEEDS to chew!

Nylabones are apparently quite safe (until they start to get too raggedy and pieces chip off)...all my dogs love them
Any kind of rawhide type bones give my dogs the runs :S

My dogs will chew off small pieces of rawhide, and I've almost had dogs choke several times so I never ever give rawhide anymore.
I like nylabones a lot, especially the Galileo and the "Big Dog" toys. They last a long time and they grind down slowly, with no big chunks for your dog to choke on. I wouldn't suggest, however, the "natural" nylabone products because I've had issues with diarrhea with them, and they disappear within an hour.

I would NEVER give my dog the rawhide bones with the knots on the end! I once had a Cocker Spaniel that was chewing on one of those and it got really slimmy from her drool, the rawhide got stuck in her throat and she looked at me with her mouth open so I had to reach my hand down her throat to pull it out! It was really slippery and I thought she was going to choke to death! So, if you give you dogs rawhides be sure they are supervised! By the way: I buy my dogs pig ears, Jumb-bones, and dental chews they love them and they dont get all slippery!

STAY AWAY FROM RAWHIDE!!!! It's dangerous, for reasons mentioned above.
The heavy duty NylaBones are great (the Galileo). Some of them are softer, and for hard chewers like Pit Bulls who could break a chunk off, I'd stay away from them. I also would not feed their edible bones. Discard the NylaBones when the edges start getting too worn down.
As for bones from the butcher, those are best fed raw.

i do get bones from the butcher, but i have never fed her anything raw. generally i boil them until the marrow is brown, and she takes her sweet time licking and sucking it all out. she'll gnaw a little on the bone but it seems getting the marrow out is enough of an oral activity for her! Is the raw healthier? Is there a way to test if she tolerates it without giving her a whole one first?

If she is tolerating the cooked marrow, most likely she will tolerate the raw marrow.
Raw is healthier all around in general, if you will be feeding meat. With bones, the raw tend to break/splinter less - cooked bones in general are a big no-no for dogs.

As Mary stated;
Cooked bones are a big NO NO for dogs. Cooked or baked bones become very brittle and can splinter and cause big problems to your pits digestive tract. Raw bones do not have this effect because they tend to snap cleanly instead of splintering. Now I don't recommend letting your dog eat the bone at all, a little health chewing on a raw bone will not hurt them.
Also, never let your dog chew on bones without supervision!!!!!

bully sticks are great chewing toys, they are natural bull penises dried and rolled... raw beef bones should be given RAW not cooked, as cooked bones splinter and can kill, while raw bones are softer and wont do damage.
