As many of you know I live near a small town called Hampton in Iowa.
I had to stop in City Hall today and asked about BSL and if it is being discussed again or where we are at with it and the answer I received caused me to go into a shock I am not yet out of!
The lady said that there is actually going to be a meeting again because there have been MANY dog bites in city limits recently BUT they are no longer going for BSL. She said that they are finding that there is no certain breed responsible for the bites...The breeds are random and that many of the SAME dog owners keep coming before the committee because of a dog bite SO they are going to try to pass a law that deals with the OWNER!! She said they are going to start enforcing the leash law and a new 'kennel/chaining' law is going to be discussed (As in Kennels have to be a certain height or have a top, chains have to be kept a certain distance from sidewalks etc.)
She said that the meeting will be interesting because many of our neighboring towns have active BSL and these ideas have never been discussed before (In our area).
I am going to be as involved as possible through this…I am hoping maybe if Hampton does an alternative to BSL it will be a ripple effect and other towns will change their laws as well!! Everyone keep there fingers crossed!
As of right now…I am SO proud to be a part of this community!!!

Wow that's really cool! Haven't heard of a place actually enforcing laws that go after the owner!! Keep us updated on how it goes.
If this goes well maybe it can actually be a reference for all the other cities doing breed bans.
Definately glad to hear that they actually figured out it's not the dog though!!

This is awesome!!! Very exciting. I hope you post updates. If they are looking to revamp how everything is done in your town, you should review the Calgary laws and maybe consider doing a presentation on how successful they have been. Maybe this could be a good resource for you: www.defendingdog.com/id38.htmlCongrats on stepping up and getting active!!!!!!!
