Book signing Sunday to benefit new Pit bull rescue
There's a new rescue in the area that's dedicated to rescuing Pit bulls and to both celebrate its opening and make a little money, it's having the author of "The Lost Dogs" in on Sunday for a book signing.
Jim Gorant, who wrote the book about what became of Michael Vick's fighting dogs, will be at the party for the grand opening of Jasmine's House from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (The actual party runs a little longer -- from 3 to 6 p.m.) He'll be signing books.
The name of the rescue is actually named for one dog rescued from Vick's operation -- Sweet Jasmine. She's the pup on the book's cover. After her rescue along with the other Vick dogs, Jasmine was taken in by the organization Recycled Love where she enjoyed a taste of love and freedom before she was hit by a car and killed last year.
Catalina Stirling, who's founding Jasmine's House, was Jasmine's caretaker. She writes on the organization's website: "[Jasmine] brought so much love and joy to me, that I will forever be grateful that I had the privilege to have known her and to love her.... I still have not gotten over her passing. But I have put my energy into creating something that she would have liked. A small place where love, commitment, and hope never end."
I know many folks in the Unleashed community are personally involved in the fight to bring greater empathy for the Pit bull breed. And so many of us have closely followed the saga of Vick and his rescued dogs.
If you can't make it to the book-signing and fundraiser -- or even if you can -- I've got a few hardback copies of Gorant's book to give away. They'd make a great gift for any dog lover. Comment here to win one -- and also, even better yet -- give a little something to your favorite animal rescue for the holidays and tell us where and why.
