Just wanted to give you guys the low down on what happened to me this past Friday. We left to go to Walmart and was gone maybe an hour. When we came home the police had my house surrounded. My 7 month old puppy D..J. had broke his cable and went over the fence, but remained in front our house in our driveway on property the whole time. I know this because my neighbor two houses down was out on her porch and fixing to go put him back in the fence when the police showed up. The officer warped in front of my house(across the street) jumped out of his car gun already drawn and when D.J. started wagging his tail and barked he shot him. I know all of this because I have about 4 witnesses that saw everything from the time it began till it ended. the officer said that my dog tried to bite him several times, but all the people who don't know me besides my neighbor are giving me the same story. That he remained on the opposite side of the street the whole time that my dog never even crossed the street. All he did was wag his tail and bark. I so want to be able to do something about his and I am trying to but I don't know how far I will get. I know the only reason that he shot him because he was a pit bull. They also stated in the report that they had been to my house on several calls for aggressive cannie calls they have never been to my house before. I don't know how the cable broke I check their hardware three times a day, I know that part is my fault but I feel like that is just excessive force on a 7 month old puppy. I am just tore up about the whole deal, but D.J gets to come home tomorrow. They had too remove the bullet and sew him up. I will get some pictures up soon about the ordeal.

OMG!!!! Wow. Right now I only have two comments.
1) NEVER EVER leave this breed outdoors unattended. EVER. NO matter WHAT.
2) This isn't the first time and it won't be the last time that a police officer shoots a Pit Bull when the dog is actually no threat.
I'm so glad DJ will make it through this ordeal, but they are allowing him home? If he was deemed vicious enough for the cop to shoot him, I am suprised they are simply letting him back home? What sort of reports/charges are there?

Mary So sorry this happened, pitbulls should never be allowed to dwell confined in the yard when mom or dad goes away, how ever secure the dog is tethered.... its safer to leave the dog inside for many reasons...I recently found a rental higher up in the boonies where I live.. the only issue this place was lacking was a "fence"....so before I moved in , I built a six foot high fence ; without a fence my Yogi would not be safe.... he is outside only when iam home and I constantly watch and supervise his whereabouts to make sure that he is indeed behind the fence...no matter how escape proof or thief safe the confined area is, I still fear the unpredicatable......... The cop that shot your dog should be reprimanded and educated, most cops can not interpret a friendly pitty from a violent one..... this could happen to my yogi as he is so friendly and approaches people in a hyper state; the cops will interpet that as a dog on the attack , it is so scary.....

Police officers in general could benefit from training in reading dog body language. I cannot neccessarily discount the fact, however, that some cops are trigger happy when it comes to loose dogs, especially Pit Bulldogs.

That is the funny thing. No charges. None what so ever. Before I had two rescues that I had let out side to pee and I went to pee because they were laying on the porch. By the time i went to pee and got back outside and that is not far to go the police were already at my house because they had went after a cat. $250.00 ticket and when my brother in law got in trouble the police had come to my house looking for him and I was in the side and my Rotty was on the front porch the officer left his door open and my rotty jumped in thinking he was going for a ride. $150.00 ticket. This is why everything is so supicious to me. Yes he was allowed to return home. Everything is just so fishy and this is what has got my wheels turning. They sent 6 police cars no 7 to me house and after all of this happened and ACO showed up he was happy trying to love on everybody and licking the ACO officer in the face. Now is the weird to just me?

Well, regardless, I hope from now on you keep your dogs safely confined - NOT loose on the front porch. Was DJ on your property when the cop shot him?
I'm also confused because in the first post you said you were told cops have been called to the house before due to 'aggressive canines' (which it doesn't sound like your dogs are, but if they are running loose and chasing cats, hey, neighbors are gonna be nervous!), but that they had never actually been to your house. In your last post you said you've gotten tickets because your dogs have been at large on several occasions. I'm not trying to accuse, nor justify someone shooting your dog, but it does sound to me that neighbors have been complaining and that your dogs have been loose and causing 'trouble' on several occasions. Cops can't read dog language, and if a cop is responding to a call at a house with a Pit Bull, and that house has had visits from cops before due to 'aggressive dogs at large', it is not so shocking that a nervous cop would shoot a loose Pit Bull at that house.

I was out side when he jumoed in the car i had just ran in the house last time yes my fault. What i meant was they just happened by whe they would get out they have never been called ou to my house for that reason. None of my neighbors have ever complained they all like my dogs. They are very upset about the whole thing and they are the ones who told me what the police said didn't happen. The other two times mentioned were when I first moved in and I have all new neighbors now and different dogs. These are also different dogs. the other two passed away one of old age and the other had heart problems she was an rescue. I know that is still no excuse i know, but this hasn't happened in four years so I figured I was doing good. The only reason I had him tied out was because I have a female in heat and I did't want him or my other male to get to her and I ahve him around back in a kennel. So after this vet bill and buying two more crates I am offically broke!

Thank you for clarifying.
Maybe time to get the female spayed?
I hope from here on out you will be sure to prevent any more loose dog incidents - for your dogs' sakes, and for your own sanity!
