There is a nice park a few blocks from my house that I adore walking in with my Luca. However, in the early evening hours, in nice weather, I have to avoid a big section of this park due to the fact that a group of dog owners take over and let their dogs run loose, an "unofficial off leash dog park". The irony is that there are signs posted that say, "Leash and clean up after your dog - up to $500 fine".
I admit to having a mean fantasy that involves a cop car pulling up on the side street by the park, and handing out a bunch of $500 tix, all proceeds going to benefit further enforcement of leash laws as well as responsible dog ownership education.
I can dream, can't I....but....what if?

LOL! Yea in the town my parents live in, people just open the door and let there dogs run loose!!! I dont think there is a leash law, but it is really annoying!!! Some times I take Boomer to visit his grandma and grandpa and at least 3 dogs come running up to sniff him!!! But if one of them would be to attack Boomer , I bet the headlines would say Pit Bull viciously attacks innocent neighborhood dog! My parents live like 3 blocks away from the police department and one day a Weimeriner (SP) showed up and was just sitting on there porch so they looked at the tags on its collar and on of them was a police badge!!! Minutes later a officer showed up and said he went in the station for a few minutes and his dog jumped out the window of his car!!! I guess since they live in such a small town it seems ok to let your dogs run free!!! (My parents always complain too! lol)

well, Mary, I would... Except the response will be "we have more important things to do"... until there's a dogfight or someone gets bitten.

well, Mary, I would... Except the response will be "we have more important things to do"... until there's a dogfight or someone gets bitten. My mind can't twist around that logic.....::headache!!!:: It's like, let's wait for someone to get mauled or worse, THEN go through this huge process of creating BSL and trying to enforce it, and all that rigamarole. Meanwhile, there is a simple little leash law that can be enforced. Better things to do? How many times have you (anyone) gotten stopped for traffic tickets, and how many of those have been for anything close to $500?? You'd think with a ticket that could potentially be written for $500 cops would be all over that. Preaching to the choir, Em, I know. But man.

No idea if there is a leash law in my town, but everyone pretty much lets their dogs run free. But, most people have a minimum of 1 acre of property, so I have to say its rare to see dogs wandering out of their own yards much. With my old dogs, I could leave them out all day when I was at work and they'd either stay in our yard, or walk up the street to my parents and hang out with them for the day. We won't be doing that with Babe though - that's for sure. Not so much because I worry how others may react to her, but because she's an adventurer. We do take her out for supervised off-leash play sessions and she already gave us a merry chase into the woods one day. The joys of living in the country I suppose. No real neighbors to worry about, but the darn dog is on a never ending quest for cows and cow poop!

LOL I love living in the country too. But we dont let our dogs run because of vehicles and because farmers around our house would gladly shoot any dog!!! Its nice to be able to go outside with your dogs loose and spend time with them and NOT worry about a neighbors dog showing up! Except we do get the occasional dump. People will dump there dogs near our house, its pitiful!!! I usually take them to a local shelter (no put down of coarse) or put up ads!!!

i live in the city of twin falls idaho and they say that is u dog is not on a leash in ur front yard u have a dog at large. Well, that's probably because the dog is not restrained by a barrier or other device. It also makes me extremely nervous when I see a dog loose in a front yard. More than a few times, loose dogs in front yards have left their property.

In my city there is a leash law thats stricktly enforced. The only 2 exceptions are your enclosed yard, or the dog park. I would also think that with a likely $500.00 fine the cops would enforce that law.

There's a leash law in our town and if no one enforces it, I do.
