I just saw a report on the 5'o clock News about a beautiful piitty boy saved from a garbage chute in Newark. Somebody just left him for dead. A custodian noticed the plastic bag moving and called animal control...hope they get a name and nail somebody for doing such a thing. The dog is now alive and well and recovering at a local vet. Such a friendly guy after what he went through. They named him Patrick for the day he was brought in. I'd adopt him in a minute if Ophie wasn't such a Mama's girl.

So glad that the custodian called animal control. Hoping for a happy ending for Patrick the pup.

You know, thinking about it...part of the problem is that there are so few easy to get to shelters, especially in bigger cities. The shelters there are usually require ID and/or a surrendering fee. They also might call the police if a surrendered animal looks abused. What they need are safe drop off locations-they have it for human children-Safe Haven-there are hospitals, churches different locations where you can leave an unwanted child...no names, no questions asked. Too bad they can't pull together enough funding to do that for pets. Even if they put them down ultimately it's more humane than stories like this. Opinions?

I saw Patrick's story last week and it has literally been giving me nightmares ever since. I really have lost sleep over this, as well as the story of the psychotic POS that held his ex-girlfriend hostage and made her watch him torture and kill 29 dogs, mostly puppies. The bad cases are really getting to me lately. You know, thinking about it...part of the problem is that there are so few easy to get to shelters, especially in bigger cities. Sadly, I don't think that anyone cruel enough to abuse or neglect an animal would bother to drop it off at all. And the reason why I always get the authorities involved in cases of abuse and neglect is so the offender will hopefully be prosecuted or at least be known to law enforcement and animal control, because they WILL do it again. But maybe some people who would otherwise abandon their animals (leaving them behind when they move, etc) would do a "safe haven" kind of drop off instead. I don't see anything like that getting funding, though.

Patrick update: (Btw, I have never ever seen a dog that skinny, EVER. I cannot believe he is still alive.) Maintenance workers at the Garden Spires apartment building in Newark were pulling garbage out of a chute and putting it into a compactor on March 16 when they noticed one of the bags was moving. That probably saved the life of Patrick, a New Jersey pit bull. The City of Newark Animal Control was contacted and Animal Control Officer Arthur Skinner picked up the dog and brought him directly to the Associated Humane Society. Ahscares.org reports that after a brief time at the Society's Newark facility, he was ambulanced to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls -- a referral hospital with 24 hour emergency care. Fox News reported Patrick was found so brutalized his bones protruded from his fur and he had no body temperature. Animal care workers are calling it one of the worst cases of cruelty they've ever seen. AHS spokeswoman Karen Powell said the pit bull mix, believed to be 1 to 2 years old, was transported to the 24-hour Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, N.J., where staff pumped him with fluids and covered him with heating blankets. Katharine Palmer, an emergency critical care specialist at the animal hospital, told NJ.com that Patrick will remain in the intensive care unit for a few more days before being transferred to the regular ward. After that, he will go to a pet foster care program and will be available for adoption. The dog was later named "Patrick" because he made it through the night and into St. Patrick's Day. According to ahscares.org, society staffers visited Patrick on March 22nd. When Patrick came in to Garden State Veterinary Specialists, he was given an ultrasound, was examined by an internist and a neurologist. Patrick is on antibiotics and pain meds. Dr. Scavelli at Garden State said that had Patrick not come in when he did, he would have died within 6-12 hours. Donations from as far away as Germany, Italy and England are pouring in to help the animal. People can donate to Patrick’s medical costs here. The New Jersey ASPCA is investigating the crime and searching for a suspect in the case. A $2,000 reward is being offered for any information on the crime.

Brings tears to my eyes that someone could do that to any creature.

I can't believe he can sit and stand. He doesn't even look like he has any muscles left! When I first saw his picture, I thought he was dead. I'm so glad that he is safe now and hope he will be better soon.

I saw this... it horrified me. I wish we could dump who ever dumped him.. into a dumpster and leave him to starve and die.

I've been following this for a few days now. I cried when I first read the article and when I watched the videos as well, It's so hard to believe that anyone could put another living creature through that. He's such a sweet boy too, I hope he recovers and has a long happy life.

They found the lady that did this. I haven't read the article yet, but it's on my Facebook. I'd link it, but I'm on my phone.

They're talking about it on nj101.5 right now.....if anyone wants to listen you can stream it online now.
Edit:I think someone should call in because ray seems to think that all pit bulls "turn" I would call but I'm at work and can't right now.

I hope that his story will motivate more people to care - and more importantly, DO something - about animal abuse and neglect. And that maybe it will inspire more compassion for pit bulls.
Patrick really is a miracle, and I am beyond happy that he was saved. I hope that the many people who have been touched by his suffering will realize that this kind of horror is happening to animals every day.
