Dharma has been wheezing and snorting periodically for the past two hours. It started immediately after she ate dinner. This isn't normal for her. She drank some water and I gave her some benadryl in case it's allergies. She seems otherwise okay, but I'm kind of concerned. Any thoughts?

I wonder if she 'swallowed' wrong maybe?

I wonder if she 'swallowed' wrong maybe? That's what it sounded like at the time, which put me on the alert for bloat. But she's not hacking or trying to vomit, her belly seems soft and normal, and she's not showing any other symptoms. And the wheezing/snorting is through her nose and sinuses. She kind of sounds like an old man with post nasal drip.

Hmmm, maybe Michele. It's not a rapid wheezing and there's no gagging, like the link described. We're in bed now and she's still doing it. Since she shares my pillow, at least I'll be able to hear her, lol!

Yeah, it might be reverse sneezing. Murphy does it every now and then, a benadryl helps if it's a post nasal drip thang. Sometimes if he's really having a hard time, I'll massage his throat a little and it helps. Hope she feels better soon.

When Winston reverse sneezes, I will give him a little treat. That seems to cure it.

Dugan does the reverse thing from time to time also. I had Dugan into the vet last week for an ear infection and the vet told me he's seen a lot of dogs suffering from allergies this summer.

Thanks ladies. I tried these suggestions for dealing with reverse sneezing, and she is still doing it at least several times an hour. She woke me up with it all night, and I tried the massaging, etc. She got another benadryl this morning too. I'm worried that maybe she aspirated her food and it's in her respiratory system. I think it's time for the vet.

Suzi...sorry to hear that Dharma is still having the problem. I ended up taking Harley to the emergency vet because it went on for several hours. They x-rayed her chest and ended up telling me she had pieces of bone that splintered and were causing a problem....I then got a lecture about being a raw feeder. In the end it turned out to be no big deal and she was fine. But if Dharma is still doing it worth it to at least call the vet.

Oh no, sorry that Dharma isn't doing well. Let us know what the vet says.

Dharma hasn't coughed or wheezed at all since this morning. I talked to our vet this morning and she said that since Dharma wasn't exhibiting any other symptoms, we would wait to see if it continued at all for the rest of the day, and to bring her in if it did. Our vet really loves Dharma (everybody in their office does, which is really cool). So she offered to stay after hours to check her out if needed. But we haven't heard a peep or a snort. We'll take her in if it happens again. She really had me worried!
Thanks for your advice and support everyone. I'm so glad that I have my forum peeps to go to when stuff like this comes up! ;D

Glad to hear today went better for her. I know it is disturbing to watch a dog reverse sneeze. It used to scare me when my ex's little dogs would do it!

Thank goodness she is feeling better. My neighbors little yorkie had a reverse sneeze fit with weezing. she was sure the dog was not going to make the night. She took him to vet to find out it was just a reverse sneeze. He does it from time to time. I dont know what causes it.
