Two books I just finished reading that are worth mentioning; "Some We Love. Some We Hate. Some We Eat." by Hal Herzog and "The Bond" by Wayne Pacelle. They both leave the reader with bunches of questions to consider for themselves. You can imagine a highway through the rural south with the sheriffs department hauling off a load of gamecocks in one lane while in another a tractor trailer brimming with chickens is headed for the rendering plant. The question is raised which birds ultimately face a crueler life and death. In South Korea they've cut back on the dogmeat industrybut they still consume around a million dogs a year. Then in the USA theres an estimate of four million dogs and cats euthanized yearly, that number greatly reduced from the 13-15 million in the 70's before the implementing of spay/neuter programs. Then by p.70 of SWL, Herzog explores ethics and the perception of cruelty by class...and on. Difficult books to process but very significant for advocacy and awareness. Only major criticism is Pacelle's opinion that Michael Vick can even remotely be forgiven for his crimes, not a chance.

Those sound like interesting reads, especially the Herzog book - thanks for the recommendations!

Think I will check the library. Most likely have to order them online.

I'm interested in reading the Herzog... but the description on Amazon makes me think I'm probably too squeamish and sensitive for it.
