Hello Everyone,
My name is Rosemary and I run a small, special needs dog rescue here in Philly, Faith's Hope. You can check my petfinder site at:
www.faithshope.petfinder.com
Check it out, I have a couple of very nice pit bulls in need of homes, including a couple of special needs, Ayla and Luther (who is much older now, I keep meaning to update his page, he is a little over a year now and a gorgeous dog but is a really tough-to-place dog because of his special needs and the fact that he is one of those "scary-looking" black pit bulls).
I am not strictly a pit bull rescue, I am not breed specific but take more pit bulls than just about anything else because as you all know, there are more pit bulls in need of help in shelters, on the streets and in "homes" than any and/or all other breeds combined. I actually started doing rescue because of a male pit bull who was abandoned on my block one very early morning a little over 5 years ago, at least 20 lbs. underweight and covered in open sores from an advanced case of demodex mange. I guess you could say Cisco is the pit bull that "changed my world!" For those of you who might have Diane Jessup's Fully Bully magazine premier issue (Dread was on the cover), Cisco's rescue story was published in that issue. Cisco's rescue was quite the education for me. Up until that point I was as clueless and ignorant about pit bulls as the next guy. I had never really met one and so only knew what I heard and read in the news. I guess the only difference is that I am not always the type that believes everything I see in the news ;D.
I am here because someone sent me a link to Mary's pit bull site and once I started reading what she had to say about this breed and her philosophy I just had to contact her. We have been chatting now for a couple of weeks and she suggested I join the forum. I am (compared to many of you) still a newbie when it comes to pit bulls but I am a fast learner and I have a mission if you will, especially when it comes to pit bulls in rescue and shelters. I want to focus more of my energies on EDUCATION and the big picture as I go forward in the hopes that someday the odds of a homeless pit bull being able to find a home go from the estimated 1 in 600 (that's the odds as I remember them when I was trying to place Cisco) to a bit closer to even odds.
I hope to learn lots from everyone on the board and look forward to hearing some of your ideas on how we can change some hearts and minds about this wonderful breed.
