I know most are against taking their dogs to "dog parks"..but being that Chance just turned 4 months, and has all of his shots, and city licence, plus he needs to burn off some energy, and not to mention he loves playing with other dogs, I took him to the dog park today. They have a seperate area for pups, and dogs under 30 lbs.
Keep in mind he was taken away from his litermates early, and never did learn any maners, well he learned some today, he found out that he just can't jump on other dogs and nip at them, he got a few lessons in maners..lol
At the end of about 45 mins. he was pooped, thirsty and fell asleep as soon as we got home. My objection is to socialize him with as many people/kids and animals as possible. More than likely when he gets older the park will be a thing of the past, but for now I think we will continue our visits for awhile...He had a blast, and I met some nice folks who Didn't balk at the fact Chance is a APBT.. ;D BTW, we had to see the vets 3 times last week, and the last weight was just shy of 24 lbs..I think he's gonna be a little guy.

dog parks carry the parvo virus which kills puppies even if they have been vaccinated. they can also get gardia, coccidia, and a host of other nasty parasites.. you are better off with playdates with other folks that have pups, or start puppy kindergarten classes .. he is old enough to start going to class.

Thanks for the info maryellen. Maybe I should mention that in order to enter the park, your dog must be licenced, which means he/she has to have had all their shots, and I realize that's no garuntee, but neither is walking your dog on city sidewalks, who knows what kind of dogs are being walked..?
I will check on the puppy classes, and will search for puppy owners that would like a playmate.

There's a great new dog park 5 mins. from my house. We've been taking the dogs there every day and have not once seen another dog there! It's awesome!
Some dog parks are good, others aren't. I just don't buy into the "all dog parks are bad" mentality. Ours is a safe area for my dogs to run, play, chase the ball without worry of them being hurt.
On the other hand, one of my pups was attacked today while on leash, walking outside our house. Luckily she's a tough little girl and only got one little gash on her front leg. The attacker is a Golden Retriever/Chow Chow cross whose owners aren't strong enough to keep him under control.
There's no way to keep your dogs 100% safe all the time...unless you keep them inside and never leave the house.

i still wouldnt take a pup to a dogpark, all it takes is one large dog to killl a pup... besides, socialization in puppy kindergarten is better then the dog park..

I have always been afraid to take a young pup in areas where other dogs have been at. I understand that they can have their shots an all.. but after having a bad experience with a puppy 8yrs ago with parvo, it leaves a lot to desire from any public place. My current puppy Maxx is nearly 3.5 months old. He gets socialize by going to my family;s house as well as others that come around. Aside from that, once he gets blood work done and a certificate indicating he isn't at risk from parvo, then he will start to see public limited places and walks around the neighborhood. He is in need of puppy classes though, the time is almost near since that will happen once he reaches the 4 month mark. good luck with your puppy and it's a good thing to hear how hard you are trying to socialize your pup with people and other animals..

Pitbulls are not safe at dogparks. If our Pits get in a fight at a dogpark, our Pit will win the fight, and lose his life in court. They have no rights under the law. They are mean, vicious killers. Remember? Please......do not take your Pit to the dogpark. Just because your Pit won't start it, does not mean he won't finish it.

If no one else is there, there's no one to fight with funny you say that n how true that can be. However; i had a friend of mine, who would never expected his pup would react "aggressive" alike with another dog. Boy was he surprise, but don't get me wrong; his dog didn't started the situation, but if he didn't react right away the situation could of turned for the worst...
