Warning... this is a rant with some graphic references. I don't want to upset anyone, but I am really angry and have to vent. I enjoy sports to a certain extent. I played soccer all through high school. My dad took us to Dodgers baseball games when we were kids. I went to the football and basketball games with my friends when I was at UCLA, and I'm a proud alum. But I would NEVER call myself a sports fan. The sports world disgusts me. The recent revelations about Penn State have really been on my mind this week. Reading through the timeline of these crimes, and how people responded at the time... it's horrific. One of the assistant coaches at Penn State allegedly WITNESSED an act of sexual abuse and even though he half-heartedly reported it, basically nothing was done. People knew this was happening to innocent children, but they cared more about the reputation of their freaking SPORTS program than they did about the victims. And now we have students rioting over Joe Paterno being fired. He knew that children were being abused, and he covered it up. He shouldn't just be fired, he should be prosecuted. How did we get to a place in this country where a stupid game of football is more important than stopping the rape of a child? I can't help but compare this to the Vick case. Looking the other way. Ignoring the suffering of the victims. Are people now going to say "they're just kids" like they said "they're just dogs?"

It's not just the athletics world. It happens in any industry. Greedy administrators put the company before anything. Money rules. If it can be covered up, they try, and hope that when it's discovered, they'll be far enough removed so as not to suffer the repercussions.

I was reading this article last night: www.cnn.com/2011/11/09/world/sweden-punishment-ban/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_worldIt's about how Sweden banned corporal punishment (spanking, hitting) of children. In the article it says: The United States and Somalia are the only two countries that haven't ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international treaty that recognizes the human rights of people younger than 18. ( www.unicef.org/crc/ ) I was that our country hasn't ratified this. But I'm not surprised either. Until our country truly values our children, we'll continue to see them exploited in one way or another. horrible beyond words.

I was mortified about this. How can anyone especially an adult turn a blind eye or a half a**ed statement and not do more! Whether they thought it was horseplay or not it should of been stopped and reported immediately, not only to the administration, the police should of been called, after I beat the crap out of the guy. It would of been worth going to jail for it. All of them need to be jailed for they actions or should I say non actions. I feel saddened that it took this long before it came out in the open and something was done. God only knows how many more children were victimized in the meantime and haven't said anything.

Suzi, I 100% agree with what you posted. I also agree with what Dave said - it's about money/power/fame in general; there is corruption everywhere. The sports world just sometimes seems to have more than it's share of complete degenerates.
I was reading up on this whole PSU thing yesterday and there are so many things about the story that are just mindblowingly disgusting and disturbing. The world is in a really sad state.

Now the state of Texas is investigating a game in 1999(?) where Sandusky had a 10 y.o. kid with him.
This went on for a long time, people knew, and no one put a stop to it. He used his "foundation" to find victims.
And the assistant coach that first reported it is getting death threats.
Makes me wish I wasn't associated with the human race.

I was reading up on this whole PSU thing yesterday and there are so many things about the story that are just mindblowingly disgusting and disturbing. The world is in a really sad state. Well, another issue is the popularity of sports. This cuts both ways. On the one hand, the way people all but worship sports heroes is what gives people like Vick and Paterno the idea that they are demigods who neither question themselves nor allow themselves to be questioned. Put these same guys in situations where you have to earn respect day in and day out and adulation just doesn't happen and maybe things would have been different. Maybe. On the other hand, when scandal does hit the sports world , it becomes a huge story. So everyone is aware of the dirty laundry in sports in a way they aren't about similar issues elsewhere. This can make sports look worse than it is compared to other institutions. What happened here is not just outrageous, but outrageously common. Google things like "sexual abuse of children in public schools". Also, while Catholic priests and bishops are getting a lot of ink and airtime with their mega-scandal, how many people have heard of the perfectly analogous scandals in other sects like the Jehovahs Witnesses and the Baptist church? As we Pit Bull advocates know all too well, the herd instinct amongst journalists of reporting and re-reporting the story already developed instead of probing for anything remotely resembling the whole truth creates very distorted impressions amongst the general public.

At this point, the main mystery to me is why McQueary hasn't been fired. I know!!! WTF?! I can understand the prosecutors going light on him, as they often, even typically do that with important witnesses. But keeping him in payroll at Penn State? Not did HE fail to go to the cops with his eyewitness account, but he's an extremely polarizing figure on campus now anyway. The only thing I can think of that is even a little bit defensible is that the Penn State trustees don't want to look like they are appeasing the students who rioted in defense of Paterno and against McQueary. Nope, I changed my mind. As wrong as they students are on Paterno, they are right on McQueary.

At this point, the main mystery to me is why McQueary hasn't been fired. i know. there must be something deeper with this guy and PSU, else i can't think of a reason why he is still there. the other thing that bothers me is the support that current and former players are giving Parterno.

There's also the underlying misogynistic...I'm not checking my spelling right now...way of thinking that's unfortunately still alive and well...and leads to the excuse " Well he's a #%$* fine ______ sportsfigure/actor/priest/businessperson, he's just got his issues with his personal life there, kain't condemn him for that"
