It's time, we have the appointment at 12. When you make the choice to euth it's about so many things. Our critters, even moreso than our human children sometimes, mark times in our lives. Saying goodbye ends a period of our own history. Added to that is seeing an animal turn feeble and hurtin'...doesn't matter if it's a dog or cat or rat or parakeet. I remember getting Coco and her sister Gaga ( Oy, Emmy is fascinated by drag queens). Allie my older one had broken her leg and had just started hobbling around the house again. As a suprise I got her two rats. The rabbits went to a farm when they turned into lean mean pooping machines, but rats were something different. Al immediately decided they smelled funny and made too much noise. But Emmy though they were beautiful. Em doesn't have terrific fine motor coordination but the rats would walk up to her hands and climb on by themselves. They are so observant too. Other rodents are so hyper sometimes but a rat wants to look around, lick you, sit on your shoulder or lap to be petted. That was five years ago...that she lived a good long life for a rodent...this is gonna be really hard

So sorry. It's never easy. Right now I'm feeling some serious anticipatory sorrow as I look at my sweet old Winnie and wonderful old Pablo. I've lost so many and life has gone one, but I still feel so much sorrow.
All my best to you and yours and of course Coco.

Thank you everyone. I took her to the Livingston vet, they were real nice about the whole thing. Didn't realize how much it would affect me. Held Coco while we waited and she fell asnooze in my arms. From one side she looked perfectly healthy, fluffy, the size of a smalll kitten. From the other side it was kind of the elephant rat...huge mass that was just too much for her to carry around anymore. I'm not somebody who cries easy...so many remarkably dumb things that one just has to accept as the way of the world... sometimes...but I was sitting there with them tears justa burbling down her back. It's about a living critter you've cared for, it's about the period of life you had them, the rats are both passed and Allie's gone and life goes on...at least Emmy took it better than I was afraid of. The space where the cage was can turn back into a bookshelf until her birthday...thanks for the kind words guys

Of course you were emotional, this was your companion animal. When people like those of us on this forum (who view our relationships with animals as integral to our lives as our relationships with humans), lose animal we are close with, it is always upsetting. Sure it's life, things march on....doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't mourn the passing of a friend.
I'm glad Emmy is handling the situation well.
Hugs!
